About this listen

Innocent Blood is the true story of Charles Hatcher and his life of crime - a powerful and blood-chilling glimpse into the darkness between sanity and madness. It also chronicles a justice system gone wrong. Throughout his criminal career, Hatcher was able to fool dozens of psychiatrists, who repeatedly failed to identify him as a multiple murderer. Hatcher's astonishing skill was not just in his ability to murder and escape imprisonment. He became an expert at manipulating the criminal justice system; overall, he outwitted police, prosecutors, psychiatrists, and judges in 12 cities and eight states.

Terry Ganey first covered this story as a reporter for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Later, he spent four years researching the material for this book, interviewing over 75 people and reviewing thousands of documents, court transcripts, prison files, police reports, and mental health records.

What emerges is a fascinating and horrifying portrait of a mass murderer at large in America - a murderer who could have stalked his victims in any of our towns and cities, whether urban or rural, large or small.

Contains mature themes.

Chilling

An immensely flawed justice system and mental health institutions, along a devious manipulator, meant that this monster was able to get away with so many horrific murders for so long. I do hope that improvements in both mean that this can't happen again, although, sadly, I think it will. If only automatic fingerprinting and greater communications between the various jurisdictions had been available at the time, then he wouldn't have been able to hide behind his various pseudonyms, and many innocent lives would not have been lost. So, so sad.

Gripped from beginning to end

I’m amazed that I had never heard of this truly chilling account of a total monster! He made the justice system look incompetent and leaves me in no doubt that there are most likely many other cases similar in how he worked the system. Well narrated and worth a listen.

Well written and narrated . Calm and balanced

Excellent in its width and breadth. Tragic and horrific. A complete insight into a a flawed system and many mistakes leading to tragedy on a mass scale . Also a testimony to the integrity of some , who fought for a just outcome .

Gripping from first to last

Well read, not endless pontification and speculation . The story is horrifying and thought provoking.
Does make you wonder how many others have “ played” the system .
