Summary
A fantasy comedy adventure!
Destined to become a wizard and save the world, Chauncy got a job instead. 25 years later, destiny is pissed. And this time, it won’t take no for an answer!
When destiny knocked on Chauncy's door, someone else answered it...and told destiny to take a hike. So instead of going on a grand adventure to become a great and powerful wizard so he could save the world from certain destruction, Chauncy got a job.
Twenty-five years later, destiny came for Chauncy a second time...and when he told it to take a hike, it knocked him out, tied him up, and kidnapped him.
Now Chauncy has no choice but to go on the grand adventure he'd been putting off, to become a great and powerful wizard. Except he doesn't believe in magic, and he doesn't particularly believe in destiny either. Problem is, if he doesn't fulfill his destiny, the world as he knows it will end. And even if he does learn to become the wizard he should have been long ago, it might be too late anyway!
Experience this (inappropriate) fantasy comedy from the author of the Runic series and the Magic of Havenwood series!

disappointing
this is a bit of a disappointing listen, I was expecting it to be great but even after the first chapter I was wishing it over but carried on hoping it would improve but sadly it didn't

A Bit Disappointing
While the story itself was cute and fulfilled the usual requirements of a standard fantasy adventure, albeit with more gay kings and gym rats than usual, the writing wasn't great. The author occasionally used words designed to sound clever, but incorrectly, this rather spoiling the intended effect. Added to that the slightly stilted performance, with some unusual choices of intonation and pacing and the mispronunciation of some words, had an overall unfortunate effect. A shame, really, because the secondary characters were a laugh riot, and the primary character eventually became quite fun, too.
Honestly, it wouldn't have taken much to make this book really awesome. Just a better editor and someone who could read it in the way it deserved.

Amateur at best
Neither the story nor the narration are great.
I’m sure the narrator is saying “feverently” instead of fervently and at one point “speaked”. Small things if the story was worth that many hours.

A little bit too nudge nudge wink wink
The humour is geared more towards lads than ladies, not that I mind a bit of innuendo but the level here is rather infantile. The plot has several interesting twists, and moves at a reasonable pace but the world building lacks coherence and the main protagonist, Chancy, comes across as a bit of a whiner. I couldn’t like him. Ms Edwards does a reasonable job of bringing the characters to life but again Chancy is given a most unfortunate and whining voice which further compounded my dislike of him.
The magic, a bit like the world, hangs its coat on a very shugely peg. There’s no reason or pattern to it other than it’s something that has to be played at.
The framing of capitalism as the evil force is quite good, however the explanations of this were a tadge laboured. I won’t be getting the next in the series.

Terry pratchett it ain’t
There’s some clever moments in this story and some bits to genuinely enjoy, the relationship between Netty and Harry especially. But it feels more like a commentary than a fantasy novel in its own right. The premise is good and will carry you through but the world isn’t realised enough to feel like a true fantasy, whimsical enough to feel like a light comedy, or satirical enough to put a sheen on the concept of “what if the chosen one didn’t turn up in time to save the world”. Worth listening to but nothing that’s going to blow your socks off.

Regretfully sent to the DNF (Did Not Finish) shelf
Having read some of the good reviews about the funny, magical book, I had to give up haveing thought I had missed something and restarted four times. Finally I got to chapter 9 without even a smile and having heard very little magic and had to give up.
The reader of the Audio is very monotone makeing all the charactures seam very boring, there is little or no humor.
Sorry, but I don't see what other people see in this book, it's not for me.
