About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

It's April 1940 and German troops are pouring onto the streets of Denmark. 12-year-old Bamse is ordered by his father to keep his head down and stay out of trouble. But Bamse and his daring friend Anton can't resist playing the occasional practical joke on the invading soldiers. When it becomes clear that the trouble isn't just going to pass them by, the people of Denmark decide to take action and Bamse and his eccentric family are about to take part in one of history's most dramatic rescues - smuggling Denmark's Jewish population, across the water to Sweden and safety.

Many of the characters are based on Sandi's own family, including her father, Bamse, and the book was inspired by the stories her told to her.

Excellent story!

Very special semi - fictionalised account of the Nazi occupation of Denmark. A pleasure to be read by the author. Exciting, humorous, informative and touching.

Excellent story

This audio book is really easy to listen to. I wasn't aware of Denmarks role in World war two prior to this. I will keep an eye out for other stories and information on this subject.

Simply exceptional

Best book I have read (or perhaps I should say listened to) in a long time, filled with humour, morality, and honesty. A story of Danish resistance I hadn't heard before. Everyone should give this book a read.
I will certainly be recommending this book to my students at school where I teach History

Exquisite

This story is real, informative and moving. it is realistic and vividly conveys the overpowering senses of fear, uncertainty and determination to fight of normal people on both sides of the struggle. it is very suitable for older children to learn about WWII without getting nightmares or anxiety as a result. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough.

An easy but interesting listen

The part of the Danes in the Second World War is little talked of, so it’s interesting to hear tales of what happened, especially knowing that these characters and their stories were based on Toksvig’s actual family. Simple but poignant story telling. I finished it in one sitting.

Beautiful story - based on family life

There is so much more that happened in the war that we don’t know about. This is a wonderful insight to how life was in Denmark. To hear it from the perspective of a young boy made it possible to touch on subjects in a warm innocent way which allows your imagination to take you completely into his world. Loved it!

A story about Denmark in WWII.

As someone who is currently living in Denmark the story came alive for me because of my knowledge of places mentioned in the book.
I enjoy all of Sandi’s books and this one was very interesting. I knew about the Danish resistance helping the Jews escape from Denmark.
It’s a story suitable for children too.
