Summary

It's difficult to find a husband in Regency England when you're a young lady with only half a soul.

Ever since a faerie cursed her, Theodora Ettings has had no sense of fear, embarrassment or even happiness - a condition which makes her sadly prone to accidental scandal. Dora's only goal for the London Season this year is to stay quiet and avoid upsetting her cousin's chances at a husband. But when the Lord Sorcier of England learns of her condition, she finds herself drawn ever more deeply into the tumultuous concerns of magicians and faeries.

Bridgerton meets Howl's Moving Castle in this enchanting historical fantasy romance, where the only thing more meddlesome than faeries is a marriage-minded mother.

This audiobook includes a bonus short story.

Critic reviews

"A hugely enjoyable take on the Regency.... I wolfed this down with great pleasure." (KJ Charles)

"I've read these books more times than I can count. Atwater's stubborn, quietly radical characters defy the expectations of both society and fairy tales as they blaze new paths towards love and decency. Smart and subversive, these charming romances will ignite your heart - and your hope." (Shelley Parker-Chan, author of She Who Became the Sun)

"Whimsical, witty, and brimming over with charm.... Dora and the Lord Sorcier have a place amongst my favourite fantasy romance couples ever." (India Holton, author of The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels)

Fantasy Bridgerton

A Farie version of Bridgerton what's not to love!
This packed a punch from the off. I was instantly intrigued with the idea of this story and the execution of it was great. Even from the prologue I was invested. I love Dora! Her wit and banter especially with Elias were top notch. This audio has a great narration and great story telling and I loved the fantasy twist on a Bridgerton type novel. I will most definitely be picking up the rest of the series.

Average fantasy-romance novel

Appealing premise, but unfortunately it didn’t end up blowing me away. There are a couple of character inconsistencies (Due to what I can only guess to be plot convenience) that bothered me and the romance felt like it went from 0 to 100. The narration was good, except for Elias voice which I didn’t like. Overall I’d give it a 2.5, very average but not bad :)

Beautiful message

Heartwarming and thoughtful book. I really enjoyed the main character's banter. I also enjoyed that the story touched upon the the issues of class inequality.

Like a mug of hot chocolate with a shot of brandy

This is a sweet romance set in a regency England that has a court magician and not infrequent problems with the farie folk. The social problems of the day and the vast, unjust difference in the lives of the ball-attending class and everyone else are part of the story too, giving the tale much of it's harder bite amongst the sweetness of everything else.

The characters are distinct, relatable and likable when they try. Good overall story, well read (I had the advantage of hearing before reading, so Elias's accent was not a problem for me and indeed, nice to hear something from the North for a change). I really enjoyed it - not my usual thing, but everyone needs a cosy book from time to time and this is very warming, with a little bite to keep it interesting. Like a mug of hot chocolate with a shot of brandy in it.

An original and compelling story

I read this story last year so was excited about listening to the audiobook. I’m sure many people who’ve previously read an audiobook experience a slight jolt when a narrator sounds very different to the voice(s) of the character(s) that they originally envisioned but still loose themselves to the story. It’s a shame however when the voice is so different that it pulls you out of the story and this is what I found for the accent the narrator gave to the Lord Sorciere, Elias. It irritated to the point where I got annoyed whenever his dialogue was present. Such a shame as the story really is wonderful

I love this book so much

This was a reread for me and I loved it just as much the second time, I really enjoyed the audiobook! I wasn't a huge fan of the fake voice for the men but I got used to it

Really enjoyable - apart from the accent

Such a great story, but why did the male lead have to sound like Stan from dinnerladies?

Sweet charming and funny

An original premise about finding love and acceptance. I found myself really rooting for the characters and hanging on every word.

Wonderful

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I only stopped reading to take time to sleep and that was reluctantly. It pulled me in and kept hold of me only letting me free at the end.

it was nice to be able to listen to the short prequel at the end. I found Latchkey as a free gift after signing up for the authors newsletter.
