About this listen

The fate of an empire lies in the hands of one untested princess.

Princess Natasia is the eldest child of the Emperor Andreth, ruler of the Four Realms. If she was a boy, she’d be the unquestioned heir to the throne. But as a girl, her main duty in life is to marry someone her father can shape into his successor.

Everything changes when an unknown, would-be assassin nearly takes Tasia’s life. Someone wants to destabilize the Empire - but who? Was the assassin aligned with the power-hungry Western lords, who have always rebelled against the Emperor? Was he hired by the barbarians in the East; who are fighting against the Empire’s subjugation? Or was he a member of the mysterious Cult of Culo?

Unsure of whom he can trust, the Emperor realizes that his daughter might be his best option for an heir. There hasn't been a female heir to the throne in living memory, but as palace intrigue becomes increasingly dangerous, the reckless, rebellious, and stubborn princess suddenly has to face the responsibility of learning to lead. Will she rise to the occasion? Or will the Empire fall at the hands of one of its many enemies?

For fans of epic fantasy...with an LGBTQ twist.

Breath of fresh air

Really enjoyed this book. It had so many actual surprises in the storyline that I hadn't guessed or expected. The way the author writes the romance parts feels so different from other books, there's more tenderness and sensual aspects to it.

I've already jumped straight into the second book.

Good start to an epic fantasy story

A coming of age/ inherit the crown story with an epic fantasy background. The story world is multifaceted; the characters are interesting and still developing even at the end of the book. There are a number of twists along the way ... I am looking forward to the next book.

So, so good.

What a great book. Loved the strong female characters, which are sadly rare in fantasy fiction. The lesbian relationship between the characters was also wonderful. The fantasy fiction world needs much more of this writing. It's so important that fiction reflects the real world.

Good Lesbian Fantasy

I enjoyed the characters and was definitely invested in them and have already purchased the next two books of the series. Some of the book felt like game of thrones had been a big inspiration for the writer but was still a enjoyable.

brilliant

I read this a few years back and the narrated version thrilled me again. The story line is one I find engaging and the plot moves along at a well judged pace . Likeable heroine's and hero's and the villains are satisfyingly villainous is every way. I enjoyed this a member or the LGBTQ+ community but more than that I enjoyed the book as a fan of fantasy fiction. Good narration really brought the book to life for me, throughly recommended
