Summary
Ian isn't crazy. Life would be a lot simpler if he was. He's eighteen, on the run, and scared - the shape-shifting delusions he's had since childhood have turned out to be real. He's the result of a dynamic mimicry project intended to help undercover agents "go grey" and blend in unnoticed. Now the biotech company wants its property back, and the only people he can trust are two private military contractors sent to find him: Rob, a former Royal Marine who's struggling to adjust to Civvy Street, and Mike, heir to a wealthy American political dynasty, who only ever wanted to be an ordinary guy. While the company hunts Ian, the two contractors try to help him harness his disturbing ability. But first Ian's got to work out what identity really means - and Mike and Rob have to decide how far they'll go to give him the chance of a normal life.

You're in safe hands
Euan Morton will deliver a cracking read every time in my opinion. This is a thoughtful and engaging thriller about a kid with some very special attributes that make him a subject of interest to some powerful and dangerous people with next to no interest in his safety or well being. Full of interesting characters and alarming ideas. Book 1 is a truly excellent set up for what I hope will be a collection over time. At over 22 hours it's a cracking slow burn thriller. The author luxuriates with the characters their relationships and their back story and provides amazing depth without it being predictable or convenient to the plot. You care about the characters so when the action happens, and there is plenty of it,you care about the out come. Morton gives such a precise and detailed performance it adds so much to the story. Well worth searching him out for some of his other books. He is exceptional in Dune and a bawdy delight in Fool and Serpent of Venice.

Another Pearler!
Absolutely love this series! such a great concept. It'd be a great TV show.
The narrator struggles a bit, flip flopping between posh American to hardy Bristolian accents at times. But he doesn't put you to sleep.

Unusual and excellent
Well conceived and written. Characters that you care about and the building blocks of a great series.
I throughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to where the next one takes the characters.

Brilliant
A character led story, full of intrigue and observations of human nature.. The narrator was in my opinion well suited to the story with a great delivery. Will definitely be getting the second book that follows.

Perfect choice in this instance adding good inflection and interpretation adding to the appreciation of the story

Editing spoilt this book for me - 1 or 2 slips I can handle but this book had many double takes - the corrections had been made but the incorrect sections had not been removed

Ten hours too long
There’s a great idea in here and the characters of Rob and Mike are engaging but I’m 14 hours in and virtually nothing has happened. There is a lot of (slightly repetitive) pondering on ethics and morals and a very YA style ‘voyage of self discovery’ but there needs to be more peril, action, or something more substantial to hold my interest in a book of this length. (I have listened to and enjoyed Jerusalem by Alan Moore so it’s not a short attention span issue :D)
The best element of the audiobook was the narration by Euan Morton - he was the reason I decided to try this novel. Great work as always from him and a narrator to look out for if you want a quality performance.

Too slow! Much as I like a long book, this one would have benefited from different writing techniques to move the story along.
