Summary

When an unknown someone shoots him and leaves him to die, Harry Dresden hopes he might be heading to a better place. Unfortunately being dead doesn't make Harry's life any easier.

Trapped between life and death, he learns that his friends are in serious trouble. Only by finding his murderer can he save his friends and move on - a feat that would be a lot easier if he had a body and access to his powers. Worse still are the malevolent shadows that roam Chicago, controlled by a dark entity that wants Harry to suffer even in death.

Now the late Harry Dresden will have to pull off the ultimate trick without using any magic - or face an eternity as just another lost soul....

Good but not outstanding!

I was really looking forward to the next instalment of the Dresden Files however; this book left me disappointed. The pace is slower, lots of new characters; some of which are hard to follow, and not enough of Murphy.
It was good but it wasn't the best I've read/ listened too.
James Marsters was brilliant as ever!

A totally new viewpoint

Loved it. So different from the other books but just as enjoyable. The other characters were similarly outstanding.

Another solid Dresden tale (Even if Harry is not)

My first Audible. James Masters is a pitch-perfect narrator for the material. As for the words, it's another Dresden tale. There's no way you're starting here and if you liked the previous, this is more of that world. If you didn't, this won't convince you. All of Butcher's strengths (and flaws) are present and correct

a bit convoluted but still a good listen.

I'd recommend listening to Side Jobs before this book. It doesn't effect the story line but the last story does fit in nicely.

Marsters is Dresden, accept no substitute.

This book is an interesting part of the Dresden Files and while not a favourite, it is very much a part of the story. Well crafted and engaging.

This audiobook finally gets the sand narrator as all he other books and it would have made sense to wait for Marsters the first time round. However it is here and it finally gets the narrator it deserves.

It just gets better and better!

Another outstanding book! This tale just gets better and better and better! I found myself smiling and laughing out loud at many points. Harry would that that defiant role model you would be proud for your children to idolise! Also a very interesting perspective on 'What comes next'.

A brilliant "Get to know Dresden" story

If you love behind the scenes looks at characters, a story that ties up loose ends and explain those strange plot twists you couldn't wrap your head around then this book is for you.
I got a much better feel for what drives Dresden's character and after listening to the series this far I couldn't really not listen to this one could I? Trust in Jim Butcher to craft a brilliant story and James Marsters to deliver it perfectly!
Highly recommended to Dresden fans that have made it through the series so far, although it will leave new listeners slightly stumped in places as the plot is based on things that are covered in earlier books.

Another great performance

I feel a bit for John Glover, the previous narrator who stepped in for James Masters... but I still have to say that Dresden is back (or is he?) in a masterfully told story.
felt like it was all about the underdogs this time and I loved it.
