Summary
I knew the sins of my past would call to collect what was left of my soul. If I'd known the price I'd pay, I would've sacrificed more to stay hidden from the magic.
In the middle of Wyoming - away from the abnormals of the world - I thought I was free and clear. I started a new life. Found a love I'd never known in a husband, and a son who was my everything.
And in a blinding instant, that life was stolen from me.
The rage of a grieving mother is an ugly beast. More so when she has the skills and killer instinct to back up the wrath and the knowledge that an accident was anything but.
Once more, I will pick up my guns. This time to hunt those who took my husband's and son's lives.
Let them see the assassin, trained to kill abnormals and stalk the shadows again.
Let them see the Phoenix rise from the fragments of a broken life as she burns with a fury that cannot be contained.
Let the killing games begin.

Urban Fantasy at its Best
Wow! Ms Mayer is one of the best story tellers out there and she certainly didn’t disappoint with this wild ride. Nix has lost everything and she’s on a mission for revenge - will she be able to avenge her lost ones! This has everything in it, magic, mayhem and adventure - oh and two wonderful side kicks in the shape of Dinah and Eleanor. I’ve listened to a few audios narrated by Khristine Hvam and she’s fast becoming one of my favourites! An easy 5 stars from me.

Another hit
Ok if you're like myself and have read books of Shannon's before, then the fact that this one is a bit will not be a surprise to you!!
I'm ashamed to admit, that I bought these books, and the accompanying audios, back on 26th June 2021 and somehow forgot all about them!! It's by chance that I found this book and I'm not going to stop until I've read them all!!
To begin with, we meet Bea, Justin and Bear, while at a Christmas party. Bear is the ten year old son of Bea and Justin....the husband and love of Bea's life....and Bear is hanging out with his friends playing games, while Justin and Bea talk with friends. Everyone invited has brought something to go towards the dinner, before they'll leave to go home.
On the way home there is a horrendous car accident. Or was it an accident. Bea is convinced it's not, but to begin with she's not sure, wondering if she was being paranoid, or has imagined what she thought she saw, while at the dinner and the lights went out. Did she??
When Bea finally wakes up, she's in a hospital bed, with some severe breaks, but she is the only survivor. Now grief stricken and taking the time to really think on what happened, she starts to get angry and she wants to find out the truth and if it wasn't an accident....then she wants vengeance!! But who would do this and why?!?!
It's at this point that we find out that this woman isn't Bea....Bianca Romano....but Phoenix, Nix for short. Bianca was her older sister, now deceased, and Nix took on her identity when she left her family and went into hiding. Zee, her mentor, had gone with her so as to help hide her.
Nix had found her sister and the note, along with her guns, asking her to hide her body from the family. Nix honoured her by doing so and then adopted her sister's name as her own.
From this point there's lots and lots going on. Action, betrayals, theft, murder and mayhem. But let's face it, this is Shannon Mayer and that means all of the above in spades and more.
I can't really tell you much more as I've already given you plenty above, but in truth you'll get most of that in the first chapter 🙈🙈🤐🤐🤐🤐
As I've already stated, I also have the audios too, and I do love to listen while I read the book. Unfortunately, if I attempt to just listen to an audio, I tend to drift off....not to sleep 😂😂 but to start thinking about what I need to do, which bills need paying this week, my shopping list....you get the picture, I'm sure.
Narrating this time is Khristine Hvam, someone I've come across before, in the Shadowspell Academy series, also by Shannon and K. F. Breene, making a strong and excellent collaboration.
Khristine has a great voice for playing strong heroines and she plenty of different ranges for narrating the parts for the men in the novels. You know that with Khristine the performance, the quality and ability for bringing the characters off the pages and into life and all for the listener to enjoy.
So do I recommend this book and audio.....
YES, I absolutely do 😍😍😉😉

Great book 😊
This was a great book that left me desperate for the next one 😁 you felt the characters pain and anger in the words almost as though they could have been your own, you were sucked into the world from the beginning right to the end. Definitely a recommendation for any book lover

Amazing
Nix is amazing and a badass she takes no bs from anyone. Even the mention of her name brings fear to most people so make sure she never has to come looking for you. Khristine Hvam narrates each character perfectly.

Excellent!
A killer hidden for more than a decade comes back for one simple thing, revenge. Even though the story is nothing other than revenge. As like many other Mayer books, Fury of a Phoenix is non-stop action. The person you should hate, a killer, you will actually be rooting for. A first for me! The narrator did a great job!

Kill Bill meets mother's vengeance
Such a gripping story made even more powerful with a great narrator. Nyx had thought she left her past behind her until the worse thing that can happen to a mother occurs. Now she will get her vengeance to everyone who is responsible for taking away her son. With the help of her talking guns (weird but they have a great sense of humour) and her loveable dog, she starts to work on her plan.
I wasn't sure that I would like this story as I don't like any stories involving child loss but this is beautifully written and the cliff hanger ending at the end has me gripped and I'm downloading the next book as I type this review. Highly recommend this book.

Hooked
I was completely hooked within the first few minutes of the book. The raw emotions of grief and revenge came through clearly in the narration. I am so looking forward to the next book.

Breathtaking thriller
Buckle up and prepare yourself for a story like you’ve never heard. A woman hellbent on revenge. A family unlike any you’ve ever met. Supernaturals that are not playing for the balance of good between humans and themselves. Twists and turns and revelations that will have you on the edge of your seat, catching your breath and still hoping and praying for that outcome you are rooting for.
Absolutely one of the best narrated suspense/thriller I’ve listened to.
