About this listen

Tolkien meets Shock and Awe

Orcs. Trolls. Wraith riders. Dark wizards. Together, they form an unstoppable force. Or so they thought.

Dark Army...meet the US Army Rangers.

When a Joint Task Force of elite Rangers are transported to a strange and fantastic future where science and evolution have incarnated the evils of myth and legend, they find themselves surrounded, pinned down, and in a desperate fight for their very survival - against nightmares of flesh and blood made real. Which means only one thing.

It’s time to Ranger up and stack bodies.

The forces of evil have no idea how dangerous a Ranger has been trained to be, and once the action starts, it won’t let up in this no-holds-barred, full-auto, epic battle for survival in the Forgotten Ruin.

From the creators of Galaxy's Edge....

Buy in, and jock up for this thrilling WarGate adventure. A battle unlike any other is calling.

Absolutely Amazing

What a breath of fresh air. Great story from start to finish. I love the way we didn't waste time with a big set up. This book starts as it continues.....100 mph.

Rangers rangering rangerly

A great adventure, narrated with mixed competence, but that may have been down to the script. narrator does do excellent voices for the characters, his Gandalf is pretty good.

The bad is the sheer lack of brevity. "Hey guys, remember how we're Rangers and we do ranger things?" The same information is hammered home every few chapters and several times I found myself yelling 'yeah, I got it bro. Ranger can be used as a verb. funny. Now tell a different joke!'

But otherwise, this is worth a gander if you are patient with it.

A novel idea hindered by mediocre writing

The concept of a US Army Ranger company getting sent into a fantasy world and seeing how modern technology and elite military tactics stack up against Tolkien or D&D-esque threats is a really interesting one to explore, and one which is carried out well in this book. Despite the incredible world building and the setup for a potential universe the Rangers can explore, the book is marred by mediocre writing: the narrator/author frequently repeats himself or the same phrase or expression to the point of it dragging the reader out of the experience he is conveying due to irritation with the overuse of the expression/phrase, as well as poorly placed asides where the author breaks from the action and adds a side note for the audience (frequently saying that “as I write this now…” or “now that I write this down…”).
The fact that this book shies away from more adult language or themes is also tempers the reading experience. Though I understand that this book is meant to be accessible to a wider audience (namely under-16 readers), the toned down language and lack of exploration of the uglier sides of warfare (or of living in the fantasy world) detracts from the immersion and the narrative, and makes the story/account seem abridged or “sanitized”, despite the narrator stating multiple times that this will be a “warts and all” account.
Despite the flaws of this book, I would still recommend it because the concept, world building, character development, and realistic (believable) military response is worth enduring the downsides for. It is a book that is both for lovers of military fiction and of fantasy, and I hope the other books build on this incredible world.

Seriously enjoyable

This was fun. A spec ops / middle earth mashup. Excellent story arc, good characterisation, likeable protagonist, interesting narrative structure and a superb vocal performance. Hurry up volume 2!
