Summary

Fifteen-year-old Isa Muirison loves her life working for the floating shops of Orkney at the turn of the 20th century. But her happy family life is thrown into turmoil by her father’s decision to emigrate to Canada, her sister’s illness, and her own love for Davie, a penniless whisky runner. Despite her family’s opposition, she follows Davie to his tiny island home where she is met by the fierce hostility of his mother and his childhood sweetheart, Chrissie. Alone among strangers, Isa’s unrelenting determination gains acceptance and popularity in the close-knit community.

But no one could have foreseen the tragedy that rips the heart out of that community and shatters Isa’s security.... Meanwhile, Chrissie has found solace in the arms of Davie’s violent brother, Jack, only to discover a darkness in his soul she could never have imagined. Events are set in motion over which the two women have no control... Will either of them ever find peace - and in whose arms will Davie find solace?

Set in the Northern isles of Scotland, amid the treacherous waters of the Pentland Firth, Follow the Dove shows how love can conquer all, and how, even in the most diverse of conditions, a community can pull together to protect its own. It describes a way of life that is authentic but gone forever.

Inspired by Catherine Cookson, Jessica Stirling and Evelyn Hood, the audiobook will appeal to women interested in historical fiction. Follow the Dove won the second prize in the novel category of the Scottish Association of Writers.

Follow the Dove

I like that this was a historical story that was not set in America, so this was an immediate A plus for me. Follow the Dove has interesting characters and an interesting plot. Those readers who love a more complex and in depth story, this is the book for them. I didn't know it was part of a series, but once I found out, I looked up the other books and they sound really good.

I don't know how to rate the narration; the narrator's voice was great, but as I was listening, it seemed as if the recording was a little bit off. It had nothing to do with the narrator's voice, but maybe it was where they recorded the audiobook or it was the recording equipment. I will say it was distracting, but the story is worth your time.

Book one of the series

The story of young, insta love. Set on one of the Scotish Isles. The lives of Isla and her family are tough. The father wants them to move to Canada, but Isla has found her first love and doesn't want to go. Tragedy strikes the family when her sister dies, and life for the family just gets worse.

I listened to this via audiobook and enjoyed the Scottish narrator who brought the story to life. This is a slow burn read where you snuggle up with a blanket and enjoy the journey they go on. I found it very emotional, enjoyable, and entertaining.

Great historical novel with romance

Loved this book. Kept me interested the whole way through & just couldn't stop listening. I like the family feuds, relationships & other everyday things families go through & how they overcome them a long time ago. A well written book.
