Summary

The fourth original novel from the much-loved space Western Firefly, produced with Joss Whedon as consulting editor, set between the TV series and the movie Serenity.

A mysterious star map

On an Outer Rim moon, Captain Malcolm Reynolds ends a card game the lucky winner of an old map covered in mysterious symbols. The former owner insists it’s worthless; back on Serenity, River Tam is able to interpret it.

An ancient legend

River claims the map points the way to one of the Arks: legendary generation ships that brought humans from Earth-That-Was to the ’Verse. The salvage potential alone is staggering.

A drifting relic

As the crew approach the aged floating ship, they find it isn’t quite as dead as it first seemed. The closer they get, the more agitated River becomes. She claims something is waiting on board, something powerful, and very angry....

Into the Black

Much darker than the other novels in the series. I enjoyed the expansion of the verse again, with more from the Alliance and Rivers tale. That said, this is chronologically book 3 in the run and doesn’t sit the best in the overall history of the characters. Still a lovely return to beloved characters and a good stand alone story. As ever, beautifully performed by Foster.

Enjoyable listen

I became so engrossed in this audiobook that the time seemed to pass quickly. I finished it in two days. I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially where it fleshes out the verse and explains its history and creation.
Thoroughly recommend listening.

Darker than the rest

Compared to the first 3 and the firefly TV series this was a lot darker than the rest and as a result gave it a much more gripping story. It was nice to focus on earth that was for a little bit and would love to go deeper into this along with other alliance experiments

Enjoyed it so much more than expected

This is a great firefly story.
Although I missed Enora and Book, the story itself wasn’t lacking without them. The narrator does a reasonable job of impersonating the characters. He does a great job of keeping up the pace and moving the story along.
It’s a lovely extra insight into the world of the ‘verse.

Fascinating

I felt like this was a really great delve into the history of the verse and a great way of typing up a couple of loose ends. Excellent performance as already, thoroughly enjoyed it.

Firefly fans will appreciate...

If you're not expecting literature, and you're a firefly fan, you'll enjoy this. Not the best in the new series but it made a long night pass quickly.

An unexpected reading order

The other books in the series so far have all taken place between the series and the film, whereas this one is much more within the timeline of the series, with Inara and Book both present and absent.

Always interesting to have more of the ‘Verse and the wider backstory revealed, and creating more questions than answers … in a good way.

Classic Firefly

This is possibly the best Firefly book so far....a real action packed rollercoaster, and very well narrated. It'll make you wish the TV series had made it into another 5 seasons at least. More, please! Much, much more!
