"An excellent, finely textured police procedural, complete with an admirable, single-dad hero; highly recommended." (Library Journal)

very entertaining

only comment is i found the narrators tendency to pause at the end of each sentence too long.

A Great Listen

DCI Fenwick is the main detective character (also in Requiem Mass)in this book. I listened to this one first, in fact, this was the first book I listened to at Audible. Enjoyed it so much I then downloaded Requiem Mass which I should have read first. Although it's not a sequel there are references to characters and events in Requiem Mass. The only thing stopping me downloading Grave Doubts is that I already have the book waiting to be read at home - will be taking that one on holiday this year.

A complex web of deceit unravelled

I enjoyed the previous book (Requiem Mass) by this author and was not disappointed by this story of the next murder case for DCI Fenwick, and DSs Cooper and Nightingale. As in the previous book I felt I was accompanying the police officers on a case as evidence was uncovered, suspects interviewed and the internal politics of the police force were acted out. It's a long book and, apart from an unrealistic section of psychological speculation, was an engrossing narrative. I needed to concentrate at the beginning of the book as an array of characters are introduced during a family gathering as a Will is read and I wasn't sure was whom, but as the story unfolded they began to crystallize in my mind's eye.
The narrator is good, which helps differentiate the players in this complex web of deceit.

Story was OK

The Narrator was good, I noticed some pronunciations a bit strange like "Canine" was pronounced as 'kah-nine', which was the first time I've ever heard the word spoken that way.
The Story was ok... I think it was missing something....
DCI Andrew Fenwick... the character seemed to let me down right at the end.... Like the waves gave his head a good bashing and made him go a bit 'dumb'.... disappointing end unless, there's another book after this one.....

Some parts I felt like they were either skipped or forgotten about, I was also confused with the characters somewhere near the middle, but eventually some parts unravelled for me.
I'm not sure IF I would read another book by this author, it depends on how her other books are rated or how good the sample sounds.

Couldn't put it down

The title of my review says it all. Thoroughly enjoyed this - found myself listening to this at every possible opportunity. Although it is pretty clear who the "bad guys" are I don't think it in anyway detracts from the story. Very well narrated.

Interesting story of death and deceit

The story of the Wainwright-Smith family, starting with the murder of patriarch, Alan Wainwright-Smith (officially recorded as suicide). Following the reading of his will, the story moves forward as we are learn more about the main characters and particularly the back story of Sally. A couple more deaths brings more intense police involvement, personally affecting DCI Fenwick later on, until finally the conclusion.
This isn’t a traditional detective story and there is never a feeling of ‘this is so exciting, what’s going to happen next’! But the characters’ stories are so interesting they keep you riveted, and a little new information is fed every so often to move on the investigation. It is well worth a read and I will look out for more by this author.

It depends on how you like your crime...

If you like your crime to be gritty like, say, Simon Kernick, this is probably not for you. If, on the other hand, you're more a Midsomer Murders or Daziel & Pascoe fan, then this could be right up your street. It's a good story and well narrated but the premise is unrealistic and the plot has one or two holes. Having said that, it's an enjoyable listen (as are Elizabeth Corley's other books) and not too demanding. Perfect to chill out with!
