Summary

DI Nikki Galena: A police detective with nothing left to lose, she's seen a girl die in her arms, and her daughter will never leave the hospital again. She's gotten tough on the criminals she believes did this to her. Too tough. And now she's been given one final warning: make it work with her new sergeant, DS Joseph Easter, or she's out.

Her partner, DS Joseph Easter, is the handsome, squeaky-clean new member of the team. But his nickname, Holy Joe, belies his former life as a soldier. He has an estranged daughter who blames him for everything that went wrong with their family.

Their adversary is a ruthless man who holds DI Galena responsible for his terrible disfigurement.

Tricky

Great plot, but was ruined by the dreadful narration. I do not think Henrietta Meier was up for this job. And I certainly know she had no clue about a Fens accent or any other for that matter. However the plot was worth sticking this out and I will try another listen, because I like the author.

Good story, shame about the narrator

I always enjoy Joy Ellis’s books. This is the first I have listened to instead of reading myself. Unfortunately the narrator was not very good. I live in the fens and found the accents very jarring. I would not listen to another book narrated by this person.

disappointed

could be a good story but has been let down by a very irritating narrator and her annoying voices

Not sure this is quite the usual JE level

I was looking forward to discovering a new series from Joyce Ellis. But this is a little forced, as though written to a deadline. With quite obvious turns. Narration needs work and a lower pitch for some of the characters.

Good story - unconvincing narration...

Having enjoyed the 'Jackman' stories, I looked forward to a different series.
The story itself was fine, though seemed to take a little time to develop.
However, for me, the narrator's voice completely failed to portray the characters not only convincingly but also consistently.
I rarely read reviews before selecting a book, but in this instance, it might have prepared me for what was to come!

Good story, poor narration

I was drawn to this series because I have read Joy Ellis’s other books set in this area. I enjoyed the story and the writing style as I usually do with Ellis, but the narration is very poor. I listen to an awful lot of audiobooks, and this is the worst narration I’ve ever had to sit through. I do not say this lightly because I appreciate that an awful lot of time and effort goes into narrating and producing an audiobook. However, the voices are over exaggerated and don’t seem to suit the characters, the accents are very poor and a number of them do not suit the location, and it just doesn’t seem to flow very well. I have found myself having to concentrate quite hard on listening in order to absorb the story and tune out the narration. I appreciate that it is difficult to voice different characters and make them unique, but one of the basics I assume when figuring this out would be: if you can’t do an accent fully and consistently, do not use it!
It’s likely that I will buy other books in the series because I enjoy Ellis’s work and would like to read them, but I will have to work hard to tune out the narration.
