Summary
A YA Dragon Rider Fantasy Adventure with a Unique Magic Spin
Dragon rider school is far more dangerous than Eva ever dreamed it would be…
She and the dragon Perrell have arrived at Fairspell Academy, ready to begin their training. But the prejudices that plagued them in Scaldrift are even worse in the capital. Everyone thinks Eva’s from the wrong social class to become a dragon rider, and Perrell is far too small to become a battle dragon. How can they prove themselves if they’re not even allowed to try?
It’s up to Eva to prove herself once more—but her magic behaves in strange ways. Eva wields earth magic, but she can also see air and fire magic. She might be able to mix the three—but that’s strictly forbidden.
When Eva and Perrell fail their first test, they must prepare for a tournament that will finally prove their worth—or see them kicked out of the academy. Mixing magic is forbidden, and could land Eva in serious trouble. But when disaster strikes at the tournament and lives are on the line, she may have no choice…

Family!
This story is about family, feelings, recognition and trust. The family can experience all of this, but it doesn't have to. We accompany Eva through everyday school life, where she learns something about magic. The author fascinates with her masterful descriptions. She maintains the tension and builds on it.
The narrator brings their own emoscions , the joy of reading out for you.

Next book tells of teen and pack dragon progress.
This is the second book and don't read this before the first as it gives spoilers from that text. I have read that account and, although this could work as a standalone, you would not hear how our 16 year old heroine went from being a farmgirl to a student at the magic and dragon riding academy. You would also miss out on how she bonded with a pack-dragon and the pair were accepted into a military training. Another omission would be the start of the relationship with Oliver and how he and his dragon relate to Ava (note the author's name) and her dragon, Peril
There are action scenes and intrigue with adversaries both open and cloaked. There is peril and conflict with external and internal people and rules. Not all problems are resolved and our heroine proves how resourceful and kind she is. The main storyline is resolved, but other threads lead into the next in the series.
The narrator coped with a range of ages, beings and genders whilst conveying emotions and clearly telling the story.
