Summary

Two strangers whose paths should never have crossed. One traumatic encounter that brings them together.

After high school senior Silas Brigs is rescued from an attempted assault, he finds himself indebted to a blond stranger. But he wants nothing to do with the calm, quiet Ben Adams. The California diver reminds Silas too much of what brought them together in the first place, an event he just wants to forget. Yet no matter how hard Silas tries to distance himself, the closer the two inevitably gravitate.

With Silas's attacker lurking in the shadows combined with Ben's mysterious history, their blossoming friendship seems doomed to failure. Both are haunted by their shattered pasts, but can they learn to face their demons together? Because, no matter how much Silas wants to resist, they're exactly what the other needs. Even if they don't know it, yet.

Trigger Warnings: On-screen, semi-graphic attempted sexual assault, aftermath and trauma of assault, homophobia (including but not limited to: bullying, dialogue, insults/slurs, physical abuse/assault, etc.), mentions of past parental abandonment and abuse, and underage substance use, including alcohol and marijuana.

Realistic and emotional story

This was a great audiobook that felt very realistic to me. Be forewarned, there are some parts that are hard to listen to - physical assault, near rape (twice), parental abandonment and death, Both Ben and Silas have traumatic events in their pasts, which have affected their lives, and the listener learns about them little by little. I liked the way the author described Silas' reaction to his attack. It felt very genuine how he wanted to ignore it and pretend it never happened, like that would make it go away, and how seemingly small things, like a smell, would trigger a panic attack. I believe this is the first non-fantasy/paranormal book I have read or listened to from this author, and in a way, it made the events of the story more terrible, because they could happen - probably HAVE happened - in the world today. I still have many questions, and I so want Silas to tell his Dad, the police. the school about the harassment and attacks, but I understand his point of view - who would listen? The reality adds a heightened sense of helplessness and even hopelessness to the situation. I am very eager (and nervous) to see what happens next.

The narrator was new to me, but I thought he did a good job voicing the characters and expressing their emotions. The assault scenes especially were fraught with tension and fear, and the narrator really captured that.

I received a free review copy and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Terrific Story & Listen🎧 Captivating & Heartfelt!

This beautifully written story captivates your attention and tugs on your heartstrings the entire time. It is the first book of the “Far from Ruined” series, a trilogy, that follows Silas Brigs and Ben Adams, two high school seniors who cross paths under disturbing circumstances. Silas is out and not everyone is accepting of him, but he is used to the lewd remarks and the hate from the haters. His biggest hater, Eric Boyt, bullies Silas and he takes it a step too far by physically attacking him in school, but Ben walks in, stops the attack and puts Eric in his place. He wanted Silas to call the police, but he refused. Ben wanted to help Silas, but Silas pushed him away, not wanting his help or pity. At that point I was not caring for Silas’ angsty attitude, sure he had his reasons, but taking it out on Ben was uncalled for. He knew it, Ben knew it, though he cut him some slack. He also did not give up on him either, he wanted to be Silas’s friend and a friend to Silas. It took some doing, but Silas lets him in, eventually. It was great to watching these two get to know each other and let their friendship blossom. Silas made assumptions about Ben, including that he was straight, but the more they get to know each other, the more they realize they have more in common than they first thought. There are plenty of layers to this story, the plotting, character development and world building are fantastic and there is never a dull moment in this book. The drama is non-stop, angst is high, and so are the emotions which hit you straight in the heart. Nikole Knight, thank you for another wonderful story and emotional rollercoaster ride.

🎧📚🎧  Nick Newport did a terrific job, bringing these characters and story to life. He understood the characters he was portraying, giving each their own voice, changing their voices enough to make it easy to follow them and tell who was who. You could hear how much heart he put into the story as he captured all the characters’ emotions, having you feel every one of them. Newport is an entertaining storyteller and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you for this great listen.

Wow

This is one of those books that starts out slower and builds but you don’t notice how much it’s built up and taking over your thought until it’s time to pause it for real life things and it’s nearly impossible to do. I loved these characters their flaws and strengths and I especially loved how their relationship changed them both. An amazing listen.

Good YA or NA romance,

The story was good, for its intended audience. The young men are dealing with harsh realities of life, pretty much alone, and in high school - somehow they become friends. These guys have it rough, but this is the start of a good young romance series.
The narrator is new to me, and other than a bit of a stilted or halting delivery at times, he did great with the performance & emotions, sound effects too. Good job all around

Fantastic performance

An emotional yet heartbreaking story that kept me hooked from beginning to end.

This is the first time I’ve listened to Nick Newport and I wasn’t disappointed with his performance. Another narrator to add to my favourite list.

Rough and very real

This was both a new author and a new narrator to me. But I am glad I lucked out and got a promo code for this book.
Silas is out and proud - and sadly he is having a tough time in school and partly also at home. Ben is a new kid in school and he befriends Silas after saving him from an attack from his worst bully. We follow them as their friendship grows stronger and develops. This is the first book in a series and I wouldn’t say there’s a cliffhanger in the end but it’s clear that the story isn’t done. I am very excited for the next book.

fantastic

I mean, wow. This is freakishly incredibly wonderfully good. I accidentally stayed up all night to listen to this (it's now 5.53am, boo) and I have to be up very shortly. Nikole Knight and Nick Newport owe me for a night's sleep. [Edited to add: the night after I finished I actually started playing it all over again.]

Honestly, this was everything I didn't know I wanted. Deliciously slow burn but never lets up with the character development, and the side characters are nearly as distinct and individual as the MCs. I got this thinking it would be angsty as hell, but apart from a couple of places (clearly signposted in the content warnings) it was actually incredibly sweet and totally adorable.

Honestly, this is the best thing I've listened to for a while. I'm going to be moderately homicidal waiting for the next books to come out on audio, but I am entirely confident they'll be worth the wait. I simply cannot believe how good this is. I got butterflies! I hardly ever get butterflies but with this one I absolutely did. Worth all the stars.

Edited to add: Have listened again and I loved it even more the second time. I need the next book in audio. Praying it comes out soon.

such a beautiful story!

This book broke my heart and then put it back together. Silas and Ben were both so relatable and their story was so emotional. I loved them as individuals and I loved their friendship. They were absolutely adorable together. I loved their banter and their flirting. Mostly I loved how they took care of each other. This was an amazing first book. I cannot wait to read the rest of their story. I adored every minute of this audiobook and I highly recommend it. it's a stunning coming of age story. And the narrator brought it to life beautifully.

emotional story

The blurb interested me and therefore I was already very excited about the book. I am overwhelmed, because the story has me already after a few pages in its spell and captivated.
Silas is a high school senior who is alone a lot, but he knows how to handle it. He hides behind his sassy mouth, which doesn't shy away from insults. But he has his heart hidden behind meter-high walls.
When Silas is attacked, Ben Adams, a member of the swim team, rushes to his aid. Not only did I love Silas from the beginning, but I loved Ben as well. Ben is calm and level-headed, kind and caring. And he stays close to Silas after the attack and tries to be there for him.
The author has created great and complex characters. I really liked her writing style, it was easy and light and it was a pleasure to read the book.
The story itself was emotional and suspenseful as the psychopath targeting Silas has yet to be caught. And I couldn't read enough of the relationship between Silas and Ben as it slowly develops. A fascinating book about acceptance. I'm looking forword to the next volume.

Nick Newport is a new to me narrator and he did a good job bringing the story to life. He gives the characters a fitting voice and expresses their feelings well in this emotional story.
