Summary

World-renowned Professor of Neuropsychopharmacology, David Nutt - breaks down the science and effect of alcohol on our health, mood, sleep, productivity, how it travels through our bodies and brains - and explains on a practical level how we can make changes to positively impact our relationship with it and understanding of it; thereby improving our quality of life for the long-term.

He will examine what the future holds for this normalised drug that governs our society and lives but is becoming increasingly unpopular due to its detrimental impact on our wellbeing. Booze Control will do what Matthew Walker did for Sleep and Giulia Enders did for our Gut - and help us make informed choices, at the very least. David will illuminate our minds on this important and timely subject.

Helpful if you want to control your drinking

This book makes you think about what alcohol is and what it does. I now look at a bottle of wine in a different way.

Great information but wrong choice of reader

David Nutt definitely knows his stuff. His book is incredibly informative and I learned so much I didn’t know, including about the government’s “safe alcohol levels” guidance and what it really means.

But he’s not a professional performer or reader and it shows. He keeps losing breath support for his voice at the end of his sentences and it makes what he’s saying difficult to hear at times. For that reason, it would have been much more impactful to have an actor read his book - the actual content of which is excellent.

As soon as someone who 'drinks a bit'

This is sage advice in a non preachy manner. Ironically I listened to most of it on the way to or from the pub but it has informed greatly amd I have already conciously started cutting down without reducing the pleasure derived.

Very informative

This guy knows his stuff. I trust anything Prof. David Nutt says about drugs and alcohol. He has enough experience in both fields to know what he is talking about it.

The book is not preachy, which is good. Its very much about telling the truth and you do with it what you will. It can come across as alot of information, but isn't overwhelming.

It also has very useful information if you or someone you know is struggling with alchohol.

Everyone should know the dangers that the drinks industry don't want you to know.

Informative but poorly read

The content of the book I found very interesting but sadly the narration was very poor.

A real eye opener - well worth listening to....several times

I read this book after not having had a drink for 12 straight months. Prior to that I would have a whiskey or two every three or four months. So I did not really have a problem with alcohol.

However during my student years and my adult years I would drink a fair amount on a regular basis. I did not realise that this was a problem and the damage that it was causing me.

Well, this book is a real eye-opener. It is well written, Engagingly narrated and very easy to follow without being patronising. Professor David knutt has done an excellent job in distilling down a wealth of research and information into a form that is very easy to follow.

If you want to know the real truth about alcohol then get this book it’s well worth your time. Don’t get me wrong, David is not advocating being totally teetotal, as I am for the bulk of the year. He offers excellent tips on how to use alcohol sensibly without alcohol using you.

Makes you think...

This book really made me think about alcohol and its effects. A bit of an eye opener for sure.

I personally have a good relationship with alcohol so a lot of this wasn't aimed at me but despite that it was still full of facts, interesting scientific knowledge, blundering politicians and gives a bit of a look into the drinks industry.

If you think you might be drinking too much, or know someone that does then it might be worth a listen.

Could improve your life

A clear-headed, pragmatic and balanced view of alcohol as a compound and as social and psychological phenomenon. After listening I resolved to moderate my own drinking.
