A brilliant book for what it is

The world is rich and hints at adventures to come and creatures to encounter. It is a story that continues to follow Paksenarrion on her deed.

There are a few "Mary Sue" moments and some annoying holier than thou incidents. But it is gripping and well written with an interesting story unfolding. It is how ever the worst of the three books, which is probably because it needs to set the story up for the third.

A must read for anyone that likes fantasy.

Love the story, but not the narrator

This is an old time favorite book from my youth and for me the story still holds, I love it.
But I had a huge problem with the narrator sadly, her interpretation of elven voices, especially the half-elf travel companion, was cringe worthy to me.

one of my favourites

youth fantasy in its best. haven't read it for almost 20 years. still keeps up. performance is very good. book 2 is, as it was, not my favourite. start of book 3 neither, but then there is the fire with okehallow... and well. it's just wholesome and nostalgia makes it awesome

Great story. Strange reading

The second book in the Paksenarrion set. The story is excellent. Moon obviously learned a lot in the process of writing (and being edited) with the first book, and this one has gone from strength to strength. Paks' trials and tribulations - and her triumphs - are dealt with sensitively and very movingly. The mild cliff-hanger of an ending had me dashing to get the final book of the series. However, the performance really grated on me this time. I didn't mind the narrator's interpretation of the first book, but I found some of the choices this time to be quite strange - the half-elf in particular nearly drove me to returning the book! Because of this narrator, I've gone back to text rather than audio for the final book.

Good old-fashioned Fantasy

Would you try another book written by Elizabeth Moon or narrated by Jennifer Van Dyck?

Yes and yes, it's very enjoyable and both do their jobs well.

Would you recommend Divided Allegiance to your friends? Why or why not?

I would and have. It's a light read with just enough depth in it to keep it compelling and everything about it is enjoyable.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

I thought the narrator did an adequate job. I wasn't blown away by it but I enjoyed it enough to continue listening.

Did Divided Allegiance inspire you to do anything?

It reminded me how much I enjoyed sword and sorcery and heroic fantasy.

Any additional comments?

Paks is a great heroine to follow, she's a traditional hero type with a sweetness to her that belies her love of fighting. It's also really refreshing to read a story without romantic entanglements and where a woman is not defined by how many men want her.
