About this listen
It’s Drop Night, the one night every decade when the gods hand out cards to a lucky few. If you get a deck, you’re a deckbearer capable of wondrous feats within the Great Game system. You can control powerful monsters and summon mantles that let you fight alongside your beasts.
Ethan Wolfe, top enforcer for the Grimm family mob, has already been overlooked on two previous Drop Nights. People of his ilk seldom receive cards, as the gods tend to favor people who follow their divine mandates, but that doesn’t mean Wolfe can’t hope.
Unfortunately, when Wolfe does get his deck, he doesn’t have time to celebrate. The rival street gang has six deckbearers and they’re cutting in on the Grimm family’s trade. Someone has to do the dirty work, and it isn’t going to be the spoiled children of Big Man Grimm.
And things might get worse for Wolfe when everyone figures out he received an ultra-rare card in his deck…
With hundreds of thousands of views on Royal Road, this definitive version is perfect for fans of Goblin Summoner, Card Mage, and All the Skills.

Audio Noir - it works!
This was something a little different from my usual audiobooks. The story and performance definitely have a gritty, noir style and it works. The main character is macho and an antihero but combined with the other characters it works well.
I don't play strategy cards games in person and I worried that I may not keep up with the card dynamics in the story (it starts quick) but I was pleased to find out that the rules are repeated and regularly referenced without it at any point feeling forced or breaking from the story. It usually takes me a week or two to listen to a story, but this one was fully consumed in 3 days - always a good sign!
The audio performances were great too. SBT always brings quality and cast was strong. What made this a cut above, was the clever use of effects making it easy to note card descriptions and live story. They've also done a great job of keeping dialogue easily identifiable from internal monologue.
I'm looking forward to book 2 already!

Listen to it asap!
"Do people really still type like this?" Yes and now go listen to this masterpiece.
JTJ outdid himself with this new project. The sound effects and character voices are on point (I literally get goosebumps everytime a card is drawn and the "battle-mode" is active) and the other cast is also excellent. SBT simply never disappoints.
But what about the story? Well the story is amazing - kinda like a mix between John Wick, a battle Card Game and a modern mafia movie. All in all it starts incredibly strong and never lets you go. At the end you will wonder yourself where the time went while simultaneously craving for more of this addictive story. If the future books manage to do the same this could very well turn out to be my new favourite series apart from DCC.

A bit too obvious but overall enjoyable
Very interesting game mechanics but a bit too predictable. That said worth a read and will definitely buy the next book

Great deck building mechanics
I really enjoyed the book mechanics and characters. The story as a mystery would have benefited from being less obvious. But it was great nonetheless like a Dresden Files meets Magic the Gathering

Captivating deck building system
Grim, dark and moody- an amazing audio performance. Story is a solid gang/crime romp, with a good magic card deck building mechanic. The audio is spectacular throughout.

Gang✨ and 🃏fights
Sometimes fun comes in unexpected packages, some times it comes with three heads. A mix of gang life and Yu gi oh that gets going right from the jump. The fights are fast paced, world building unique and characters keep true to the setting. The voice acting and effects really bring the book to life, allowing you to get lost in the story.

My Decks Biggers Then Yours!
Gangstas get decks, at first i wasnt sure about the mash up of genres but by the end i was loving the way that the deck system worked in this book. Despite its fantasy genre this was a more realistic way that i could really believe real humans would use them like.
Overall a more gritty type of deck building fantasy with heavily influenced by mobster type stories. definetly worth a listen if you like either of these genres
