Summary
From award-winning comedian and writer Katy Wix comes Delicacy - a different kind of memoir from an astonishing new voice.
Twenty-one snapshots of a life - some staccato, raw and shocking, some expansive, meditative and profound, underpinned with moments of startling humour that shatter the darkness - all beginning with a single memory. A memory of cake.
The sickly royal icing marked the moment Katy found her voice. The madeira cake was the sun her group therapy sessions orbited. The 'missing cake' from a lost holiday has never let go. The Bara brith eaten in hospital after a life-altering car crash was as tough as the metal that hit her. The supermarket rock cake was where she 'practised wanting'.
Shocking, raw, darkly funny and deeply humane, Katy Wix's exploration of trauma, grief, addiction, love, loss, memory and hope is truly unforgettable.
Critic reviews
"Painfully raw and incredibly funny." (Simon Amstell)
"Katy sees the world like no one else and deciphers it with extraordinary beauty. Delicacy took my breath away." (Lolly Adefope)
"Fabulous story-telling and completely delicious writing." (Cariad Lloyd, host of Griefcast)

Loved it
Recommend to anyone who’s struggled with grief, loss, mental illness, self image.. and just life in general. I’m a fan of Katy, but I think it’d still be a great read if you’re not one!

Lots of insights
An interesting book telling of the difficult inside rather than focusing on the no doubt also interesting, seemingly glamorous outside of which the listener got tantalising glimpses.
Helpful on grief. It seemed to do a step change at the time of an accident (no more spoiler than this mention). I felt much more relaxed in the reading of it after this event. I sometimes had the impression the narrative was trying before, trying to be something....
Maybe this reflected a change in the author's life after a so-called life-changing event.
Admirable acceptance and lack of victimhood.

Thoughtful and poetic style
Would have liked to know how she got into acting. Would have liked to know more about her family.

Absolutely outstanding!
What an incredibly honest look at life! Katy Wix not only self-assesses in this memoir but also reveals truths about human nature and relationships that many will recognise in their own lives. Despite looking at grief and other mental health, there are funny moments and beautifully poignant ones, too. Some one-liners that will stick with me, for sure. I highly recommend this audiobook to all, as I think there’s something for everyone to enjoy, find funny, or find comforting or helpful.

Read this.
Got this as an audio book and stuck a chapter on to see what to expect, then ended up listening to it for the whole evening and then every minute I could sneak away from what I was supposed to be doing, until it, regrettably, ended. Review words like Brilliant and Excellent don't really cut it. Annoyed I've finished it to be honest. The author would probably hate this but it's one of the wisest things I've read. For anyone whose mental health makes them feel like an alien this will make you feel less like an alien and also make you laugh a lot. The section on personal trainers is a masterpiece. I think I love her. What the hell am I supposed to read now?

So beautiful, I listened to this in a single day
So, so beautiful. You will never look at cake the same way ever again. I knew Katy from her role on Ghosts and then listened to her appearance on Griefcast. But after listening to this book, I feel like she’s a writer/poet above all else. This is so exquisitely written and incredibly well read by her as well. It reminds me of Robert Webb’s How Not To Be A Boy and Jenny Slate’s Little Weirds. Intimate, insightful, vulnerable, tender, hopeful.
