Summary

To save his favorite newspaper, Nero Wolfe steps into the crossfire of a tabloid war.

Master sleuth Nero Wolfe’s small circle of friends is limited to his assistant, Archie Goodwin; his chef, Fritz; and Lon Cohen, the head man at the New York Gazette. Cohen knows more about the city’s power structure than any man in Manhattan, and for years, he happily passed Wolfe information in return for the odd exclusive scoop. But now Cohen needs Wolfe’s help, for the Gazette is ailing and the vultures have begun to circle.

Scottish newspaper magnate Ian MacLaren plans to gut the paper and turn it into a sex-filled conservative rag. Standing in his way is the company’s chief shareholder, Gazette heir Harriet Haverhill. But when the aged Ms. Haverhill dies in an apparent suicide, no one remains to resist the Scot’s advances except Wolfe. MacLaren may be fierce, but when the cause is just, Nero Wolfe knows how to play dirty too.

Yes, satisfactory!

I thoroughly enjoyed this. The plot was well conceived until almost the end. I agree about not faking a Scottish accent. (I am not Scottish.)

Good old-fashioned entertainment!

If you are looking for a classic who-done-it which is well written and entertaining, you cannot go wrong here. Listening to Goldsborough's Nero books is like wrapping up in a warm blanket with a cup of cocoa....very relaxing.

Cleverly written

A bit different from what I listen too but really enjoyed this book. Very humorous at times .
Very good narration ( Scottish accent a bit weak) but I think it’s addictive to listen to these books . 😀

"Satisfactory"

Very enjoyable.
True to classic Nero Wolfe.
However, American narrators should NOT attempt Scottish accents!

Like the gentleness of it

If you’re into Miss Marple, chances are you like this. If you’re more into Henning Mankell it’s probably not your thing. Listened to another one and will hunt for the next in the series. Thank you.

Good Story, Boring Cast!

I’m reading this series back to back and have discovered a new love. An interesting plot but the characters were all dull - even the Scotsman! (As an aside, he doesn’t get that much airtime, so the grousing over the accent is misleading, one can easily overlook it! Just think of Sean Connery in The Hunt For Red October, that was the worst ‘attempt’ at a Russian accent ever! Yet a great film). The narrator was very good and it wasn’t his portrayal that was dull, it was just that none of the characters were even remotely interesting! With the exception of Archie…

I look forward to the next episode and hope that the characters are not as dull.

A blast from the past

I was delighted to find this series of Nero Wolfe books, albeit it not from the master Rex Stout. Any misgivings I had soon floated away as I got lost in the story and the delight of immersing myself in the eccentricities of Wolfe.

The only crunch was the most odd accent given to the 'villain' of the piece. A horrible attempt at a Scottish accent veered between Geordie, Irish and a kind of west coast noise which wasn't pleasant, especially given that the bloke was meant to be from Edinburgh. However, I can forgive this.

Lovely stuff!

"Intuition is the partner of introspection."

The second book in the triumphant return of Nero Wolfe, large, lazy and lover of orchids, who, whilst rarely leaving his comfortable brownstone home, still solves large crimes (for an even larger fee) with the very able assistance of Archie Goodwin.

Robert Goldsborough's reincarnation of Wolfe and his household is so close to Rex Stout's original as to be enjoyed by all. This time, when a major shareholder in the Gazette newspaper apparently commits suicide under pressure from an hostile takeover bid, Wolfe will not believe that she would ever had killed herself despite no one actually benefiting from her death.
Nicely performed by L.J.Ganster, a most enjoyable six plus hours, a free download through the Audible Plus programme

Entertaining yarn!

Good easy listening story. I particularly like L.J. Ganser 's narration ,having said that the Scottish accent is not his best. Didn't detract from the story and I will look for more in the series.
