Detectives Max Craigie and Janie Calder arrive at the scene, a small town where everyone has secrets to hide. One thing’s for certain: it might be the latest killing, but it won’t be the last…

This killer can never be caught.
As the body count rises, the investigation uncovers large-scale corruption at the heart of the Scottish Police Service. Now Max and Janie must turn against their closest colleagues – to solve a case that could cost them far more than just their lives…

Twice Listened, Still Thrilled!

This is my second listen of this audiobook and I enjoyed it even more than the first time. It is a brilliant and realistic police procedural with a complex plot and engaging characters. The story is full of twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. The author has created a vivid and authentic picture of Scotland and its criminal underworld.

The narrator, Angus King, is superb. He brings the story to life with his excellent voice and accents. He captures the emotions and personalities of the characters perfectly. He makes me feel like I am right there with them, experiencing their joys and sorrows, their fears and hopes. He makes this audiobook special.

I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who enjoys crime fiction and mystery thrillers. It is one of the best I have listened to this year. I am repeating my listen of all the audiobooks in the series and I can’t wait for the next one!

Excellent!

Narration here is, for me, top notch - I have no idea why some have said otherwise. I listen to audiobooks all day, every day while I work and Angus King is one of the best narrators I've heard.

This book had me gripped from start to finish. The lead characters are likeable and realistic.
I did groan inwardly when DS Cragies dog started playing such a big part - purely and simply because I assumed (incorrectly) that she would come to harm as this seems to be a favourite plot these days - pet killing. However, fortunately, she was just an important part of the detectives life. I do hope that the author doesn't use this ploy later in the series - but fear it's as predictable as the death of a new crew member being beamed down to a planet with Kirk, Spock and Bones (one for the kids there!)

If you enjoy a crime drama, I don't see how you can fail to enjoy this one. All in all, it's beautifully written and read.

FANTASTIC

I had already read this book previously so this was a re-enjoyment/introduction to Angus King. He did a fab job as narrator, really brought it to life and did several different voices for the characters

1st time

This is the first book of Neil's that I've listened to, purely because of Angus King really.
The book is well written and follows Max from the grave to corruption. It's an east follow, now onto the next installment.

Great book

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one. The characters were portrayed really well by the narrator who did a great job with the accents. The story was easy to follow, looks long and you wonder how they will fill out nearly 12 hours, but I really couldn't wait between instalments. Thoroughly recommended.
