About this listen
Decades ago, when he was a young CIA analyst, President Jack Ryan, Sr. was sent on what was supposed to be a simple support mission to investigate the death of an operative looking into the suspicious banking activities at a Swiss bank. Ryan’s dogged tenacity uncovered not only financial deceit, but also the existence of a KGB assassin code-named Zenith.
He was never able to find the killer. But in the shadowy world of covert operations, nothing stays hidden forever. In the present, a new strong man has emerged in the ever-chaotic Russian republic the enigmatic President Valeri Volodin. His rise to power was meteoric, but shrouded in deception and treachery.
The foundations of his personal empire are built on a bloody secret from his past, and he will eliminate anyone who comes close to that truth. For he has set in motion a plot to return Russia to its former glory and might with the rest of the world once again trembling in fear of the mighty Bear. When an old friend of the Ryans is poisoned by a radioactive agent, the trail leads to Russia. And Jack Ryan, Jr. aided by his compatriots John Clark and the covert warriors of the secretive Campus must delve into an international conflict thirty years in the making, and finish what his father started.
With President Ryan fighting a desperate campaign to thwart Russian aggression, and his son fighting a silent war against a ruthless foe, the chances for global conflict grow greater ? and the possibility of survival may soon be lost for all...

What did you like best about this story?
How he predicted the present day situation in Ukraine, his next book about a plant in the White House would have been a smash.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Please tell the producers of these AUDIO BOOKS that we British don't all have a cross between a Aussie and Cockney accents. The worst accent since Dick Van Dyke.

Another great story.
A great story, nicely told but why I gave 3 stars for the performance is the bloody awful English accents is either jolly hockey sticks or as most Americans seem to think Dick Van Dyke cockney (which no-one but American actors talk like). If you can't do something well just don't do it and get someone else to.

Classic Clancy
If you know and love Clancy then you'll enjoy this. The intrigue, espionage and plot lines are there with all the stereotypical characters.
The grumpy and aloof Brits, the dastardly Russians, the bumbling Ukrainians and the bold and courageous Americans.
Narrator isn't bad but some of the accents are pretty weak (particularly the English ones!).

Great story
Couldn’t put the book down (figuratively). English accents were awful but it’s easy to forget this when the story picks up!

Readers spurious accent
Slightly off-putting English accent which all sound slightly Australian, maybe not discernable to an American listener, but really is to an English ear.

But hats off to the late Clancy & Mark Greaney
About two years ago I re-read all of Clancy's work after many years of liking it. After the re-reading a felt a little let down by his writing style as it felt very juvenile. It left me with the same feeling of re-watching an 80s movie I really liked back in the day and realising it was very cheesey.
But hats off to the late Clancy & Mark Greaney this book has a great storyline and is well told. Excellent work.

Good bridge between Jnr and Sn and a nice way to flesh out Snr’s rise through the CIA
Love the Ryan-verse and how it stretches over various decades. Hope this continues through the later books
