About this listen

When Laurel West discovers her estranged sister Abby has checked herself into rehab and wants her to take care of her 14-year-old son, she doesn’t hesitate to step in. Abby was there for Laurel a long time ago, and she longs to be able to offer the same. However, as a single woman who still dreams of the fairy tale, Laurel isn’t prepared for teenage Zac’s sullen moods or silent rage. When he’s expelled from school, she decides to take drastic measures and temporarily relocate them to her great aunt’s cottage on the windswept hills of the Orkney islands north of Scotland...about as far as she can run from their problems, but will it be far enough?

From the moment they step onto the island’s shores, everything seems to go wrong...including a run-in with eccentric sheep farmer Archie MacDougall. When Zac gets in trouble at the village pub and is rescued by Archie, Laurel thinks things are only getting worse. But Archie’s suggestion of putting Zac to work on his farm might be the change he needs, and Laurel strikes up a surprising friendship with a man who is about as far from the fairy tale as she can imagine.

Can such an unlikely and impractical love bloom in such a brief moment out of reality? And will two lost and lonely souls find each other at the edge of the world?

Easy listen whilst driving

The narrator has an interesting voice which in the beginning I found irritating - persevered and listened to the book.
I wish that authors used the correct words floor/ground and take/bring other than that an easy listen which did not require too much concentration

Annoying narrator

Story was ok, but the narrator was awwwwfuuul, maaaaykinnng every syllable into 3 with the same sing song rhythm and expression for every sentence. I will avoid any audio book she reads from now on.

Shame about the readers voice

I have enjoyed this book but found that the readers voice to be very annoying and in parts very condescending the story had a guy who had a lovely Scottish accent which another character took the Mickey out of which was fine but coming from this reader sounded as though she was annoyed with the accident the same way that I was with hers and for this reason I did not enjoy the book.

Nice story but awful narrator

Nice story, I could imagine myself in The Orkneys but it spoilt by the narrator, she sounded so false with the posh accent, it was like she was trying to seduce you with the low whispered sentence endings. I will not be listening to any other audio book she has narrated

Story ok; narration awful!

Predictable storyline but short and reasonably interesting to want to know outcome. Narration was simply awful. I had to speed it up as couldn’t stand drawl. Scottish accents were an insult!

Happy ever after Christmas story

Utterly spoiled by the narration.
I was looking for an uplifting Christmas feel good novel, nearly gave up because of the narration but stuck with it. Was it worth it…? Maybe 7 out of 10.

Great storyline, mellow voiced narrator

I keep listening to this story, over and over again, it's just the right tonic for when you need a bit of comfort and hope... and the mellow voice sends me off to sleep when I've got insomnia... the characters are well drawn and believable.
