Summary
A lost child, a family divided, the bitter backdrop of war.
After the Franco-Prussian War and the siege of 1870-71, the St Clair family return to Paris, seeking refuge and security, only to be swept up into the terrible cruelties and violence of the Commune. Here their young daughter, Hélène, falls ill and, in an unlucky twist of fate, becomes separated from her family.
Alone and frightened, she has to fend for herself on the war-torn streets. Meanwhile, her two brothers face each other as mortal enemies across the barricades.
Heart-stopping and gripping, this classic Diney Costeloe story shows the courage of one family in the face of ugly violence and great danger.

Easy read
I like a Diney Costeloe book, they are easy to listen to/ read, have some good characters and some interesting bits of history flowing through the story line.
This was not one of my favourite of her books and I doubt I will go on to listen to the sequel, however it was still good.

Not my favourite narration, good plot
I really enjoyed the storyline but there was something lacking here that meant I wasn’t engrossed. I don’t usually enjoy war/historical stories and felt this would have been better if it was written to make you more invested in the characters. But overall it is a good plot. There was nothing wrong with the narration but it was nothing special- sometimes that’s the difference between whether you’re pulled into the story or not. It sounded odd hearing a French street boy with a cockney accent but I suppose it would have been sillier to do fake French accents.

A brilliant....
storyline from start to finish with some great characters and antics within the book. The narrator was very good at using different voices for the characters.

Another amazing creation!
I have listened to most of Diney Costeloe's books now, and this one doesn't disappoint! I was a bit more apprehensive with it being based on a period of time I had little or no interest in, or knowledge of, but as usual Costeloe's character development and story telling means that this was irrelevant. I was left wanting to know more so that's a bonus in my book!

Love Diney Costello
love Diney Costello but this first one of two, took a long time and
the accents were here and there, come and gone. I am sure if that that the 2nd book will be better.

Another wonderful story from Diney Costeloe
Absolutely loved this story, with a young girl in a very unstable city of Paris as the central character. Set in the 19th century, Paris is in turmoil, on the brink of a civil war. So many things happen to young Helene, but she is helped and harmed along the way. She is a very resilient and resourceful young girl, and manages to survive some extremely challenging situations.
A must read for fans of Diney Costeloe, Anna Jacobs and Rosie Clarke.

A Very Good Story
This was a very good story. I've now learnt about the history of the 1871 French and Prussian War. The story itself centres around Helene, and what she encounters as she becomes alone in the city of Paris during all of the fighting of the war. Helene for eleven years old is a very resilient, intelligent and resourceful little girl. And her story was very good. Brilliantly narrated by Georgia Maguire. Thank you to Georgia and Diney for an enjoyable few hours. 🦋🌸
