Summary

From Dr. Amy Blackstone, childfree woman, co-creator of the blog we're {not} having a baby, and nationally recognized expert on the childfree choice, comes a definitive investigation into the history and current growing movement of adults choosing to forgo parenthood: what it means for our society, economy, environment, perceived gender roles, and legacies, and how understanding and supporting all types of families can lead to positive outcomes for parents, non-parents, and children alike.

As a childfree woman, Dr. Amy Blackstone is no stranger to a wide range of negative responses when she informs people she doesn't have - nor does she want - kids: confused looks, patronizing quips, thinly veiled pity, even outright scorn and condemnation. But she is not alone in opting out when it comes to children. More people than ever are choosing to forgo parenthood, and openly discussing a choice that's still often perceived as taboo. Yet this choice, and its effects personally and culturally, are still often misunderstood.

Amy Blackstone, a professor of sociology, has been studying the childfree choice since 2008, a choice she and her husband had already confidently and happily made. Using her own and others' research as well as her personal experience, Blackstone delves into the childfree movement from its conception to today, exploring gender, race, sexual orientation, politics, environmentalism, and feminism, as she strips away the misconceptions surrounding non-parents and reveals the still radical notion that support of the childfree can lead to better lives and societies for all.

Everyone should read this before deciding to have children.

I have been on the fence about having children and recently decided I don’t want children, I read this book because I want to confirm my thoughts. I know times will change and of course there is always a possibility that I may change my mind but after reading this book I feel More at peace with my decision I don’t feel so alone and outnumbered. I think everyone should read this book if they want children or don’t just so they can make their mind up clearly. I work in childcare and see so many people who just didn’t know what they where letting themselves in for, this may just help a little bit. 😊

So happy I read this

What a comforting, knowledgable, balanced view on the child free situation. As a woman just turned 31 who’s questioning my assumption I’d have children at some point, because some point is now a little close for comfort, it was amazing to hear such a great mix of data and personal experience on the subject.

Absolutely brilliant

I really enjoyed this book, it provided some reassurance about my choice not to have kids and made me feel less alone. I love that studies are referenced throughout and it's not just an opinion piece. Thank you to the author for writing this book

Wonderful and much needed discussion

I wish more could have talked about on this topic so openly. Unlike most self-unveiling podcast on this topic, this book was written with reviews of existing studies and well-rounded knowledge. It is compassionate and informative. It deserves to be read by all, and different generations, old and young.

Really great book

I've never felt the urge to be a father, and I'm seeking out books about the truths of parenting as I decide whether or not to get a vasectomy. This book has really helped to articulate feelings I've had, and doesn't have any radical, edgy, rebellious nonsense attached. Highly recommended to anyone else considering parenthood.
