Summary

Everybody thinks that Charlotte Lucas has no prospects. She is unmarried, plain, poor and reaching a dangerous age. When she stuns the neighbourhood by accepting the proposal of buffoonish clergyman Mr Collins, her best friend Lizzy Bennet is appalled by her decision. Yet this is the only way Charlotte knows how to provide for her future. Her married life will propel her into a new world: not only of duty and longed-for children, but secrets, grief, unexpected love and friendship and a kind of freedom.

Jane Austen cared deeply about the constraints on women in Regency England. This powerful re-imagining takes up where Austen left off in Pride and Prejudice, showing us a woman determined to carve a place for herself in the world. Charlotte offers a fresh, feminist addition to the post-Austen canon, beautifully imagined and brimming with passion and intelligence.

Charlotte

Loved this book! It reads as an extension of much beloved Price and Prejudice and the author has been very respectful of Jane Austen's original work.I

Answers a long thought question

I loved this book, it follows the unanswered thread of Charlotte Lucas's life and wider spreads the Pride & Prejudice story with a delightful read. fabulous

What a gem!

Thoroughly enjoyed both the story and narration- it certainly rounded off the characters that we had been originally introduced to by Jane Austin, in a most delightful and satisfying way - can’t fault anything:)

Outstanding story

The author has created a beautiful story so well written that at times I was in awe at the phraseology and fluidity of the sentences and was so sorry to finish and greedily wanted more. Oh that anyone would be lucky enough to have such a friend as Charlotte. I’ll be looking out for additional books by the marvellous Helen Moffett.

Loved the focus on Charlotte

I was not sure what to expect with this novel and have been on the fence about spinoff novels related to pride and prejudice. But I really enjoyed it and I really appreciated the fact that it focused on a particular character in pride and prejudice that it’s easy to overlook. I enjoyed the narration and felt wholly absorbed in the story. When I would recommend, it is a lovely gentle read and says something about the life and expectations of women of the time. I also really liked the flashing out of the character of Anne de Bourgh.
I have also been listening to Longbourne which tells the story from the servants point of view another unique take on a classic novel.

I am enjoying this as well and would recommend

Just wow

Excellent. I have been reading/hearing a few of the many sequels to Pride and Prejudice. This is the best I have discovered so far. The novel definitely honours the original. Highly recommended to all lovers of Jane Austen and her works.

A brilliant perspective of what is often one P & Ps underrated characters

I loved the story. One of my favourite bits was Charlottes possible motive of marrying Mr Collins ie revenge on Mrs Bennett. I’m not sure about the graphic sexual bits, although not offensive they seemed a bit out of place in a JA story. Although the story is about Charlotte it would have been nice to hear what happened to Elizabeth in the epilogue.

A captivating read of an underestimated character

i feel like the Author really understood Charlotte and brought her to life. A pragmatic and sensitive character who sees more, because she is neither beautiful nor brilliant. Her perspective on characters in the P&P universe enthralled me
