Summary

Winner of the 2001 Christy Award, Lynn Austin captures the turmoil of the Civil War in this stirring novel. From vast plantations to the cramped closets of the Underground Railroad, it follows one young woman's inspiring journey of risk and sacrifice.

Caroline Fletcher, the daughter of a wealthy family in Richmond, has never questioned her father's right to own slaves. But after a lengthy visit to her uncle's home in Boston, she learns of the abolitionist movement. Now, knowing that slavery is against God's will, she must risk betraying the people she loves to obey her convictions.

Compelling characters and the searing conflicts between North and South create a vivid canvas for Caroline's struggle to make the right decisions. Through Christina Moore's hearfelt narration, Candle in the Darkness burns even brighter.

A powerful and beautiful read.

I didn't expect to enjoy this book so much. A little bit of everything in it, love, war and all that is in between. I don't even know why I chose this subject, a story set around the American civil war, but I am so glad I did. The narrator was perfect and brought all the characters to life. Really enjoyed it.

Moving historic novel

This is a wonderful story of conflicting loyalties to both her family and her desire to see her slaves freed. Her faith in God to have His will done gives her the courage of her convictions to support the North rather than the Confederacy, despite the effect that this may have on her relationship with her fiancé. The reader helped in my enjoyment of this book by bringing the story alive.
