About this listen

The sun is bloated, diseased, dying perhaps. Beneath its baneful light, Shadrapar, last of all cities, harbours fewer than 100,000 human souls. Built on the ruins of countless civilisations, Shadrapar is a museum, an asylum, a prison on a world that is ever more alien to humanity. Bearing witness to the desperate struggle for existence between life old and new is Stefan Advani: rebel, outlaw, survivor. This is his testament, an account of the journey that took him into the blazing desolation of the western deserts and into the labyrinths and caverns of the underworld. He will meet with monsters and mutants. The question is, which one of them will inherit this Earth?

Humanity clings to life on a dying Earth.

Epic, far-future science fiction from an award-winning author.

Surprised by a good book

judging this book on the one review it had, I was expecting a boring tale. instead I found something of a hidden gem. it loved it, the story and the narration. the upbeat and chirpy voice of the narrator annoyed me at first and then I came to understand the he was perfect and that his characterizations were also spot on. Adrian Tchaikovsky is quickly becoming a favourite author of mine as I have yet to listen or read a book of his that I didn't like or enjoy.

really good book, great narrator

set me off on a spree with the author, thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing. one of those books that conjures vivid imagery in the imagination, there's an awful lot in there. the end of the world made great subject material

strange world but good story

A strange world that you can't help but get drawn in to, prisons and power, transitions and great characters. Easy to listen to and read very well.

A struggle.

I went into this seeing loads of positive reviews and thought why not give it a go, it sounds great. I can't fault the narrator, his voices and narration throughout was amazing. The story itself just got very lost on me, there was a lot of world-building and when it settled down a bit I just struggled a lot to keep my attention on the book which almost never happens. It may be a good book but it is not for everyone.

good book good reader

I read and loved other books by this author the dragonfly falling series remains one of my favorites. This book was not quite as good the story is less imaginative (in terms of fantasy and the dragonfly series) and not a big epic storyline, it's a stand alone book. The story follows one main character and his personal struggles. it was a good book and would be a good book for someone new to fantasy. The reader was also good the voices were not too annoying, you could tell which character was talking. I listen to this sometime before writing this review, unlike other audiobook the reader doesn't stand out in my memory, I remember the story which is how it should be. this was an audiobook that transported me into the story something I have found happens less often with audiobooks compared to reading a book.

Great, awesome!

I didn't want it to end. I was worried slightly at first that it would be a depressing book. But no! it had humour and a great plot that winded up coming together well.

it's alright. felt like a chore to finish

Could have been a lot shorter. lots happens in the background and the story just jerks along with new amazing things happening for no real reason. still, glad to get to the end and the vision interesting enough.
