Summary
Brought to you by Penguin.
Bridget Jones is mad about the boy – the laugh-out-loud No.1 bestseller, soon to be a major film starring Renée Zellweger.
What do you do when a girlfriend’s 60th birthday party is the same day as your boyfriend’s 30th?
Is it morally wrong to have a blow-dry when one of your children has head lice?
Is sleeping with someone after 2 dates and 6 weeks of texting the same as getting married after 2 meetings and 6 months of letter writing in Jane Austen’s day?
Pondering these, and other dilemmas, BRIDGET JONES stumbles through the challenges of single motherhood, online dating, and achieving ‘acceptance and calm’ in what SOME people rudely call ‘middle age’.
‘In an emergency, I turn to Bridget Jones’
DOLLY ALDERTON
‘Groundbreaking, iconic…a trailblazer’
CAITLIN MORAN
‘Sharp and humorous…genuinely moving’

Gah!
This story just doesn't add up. Bridget is now supposed to be a lonely widow in her fifties but only has to lose a bit of weight an don a pair of thigh boots, and she has men panting after her. Gone are the big knickers to be replaced by g strings and low rise jeans. She has the mental age of a challenged 16 year old and seems to need advice on how to get dressed in the morning. Despite the fact she has been married to a leading human rights lawyer she has no opinions about anything other than what is going on in her own small world. The sex scenes are ghastly and the references to nits and bodily functions are repetitive and frankly tedious. Despite this, there are a couple of amusing scenes that served as a faint reminder of the earlier books. I carried on listening to the end and when it was all over I heaved a huge sigh of relief. Like other reviewers I wish that Helen Fielding could tear this up and leave us with the memories of how good Bridget Jones used to be.
I gave this three stars based on the strength of Samantha Bond's narration. I just wish that Mabel didn't so so much like Violet Elizabeth Bott.

Fun listen
If you liked previous Bridget Jones stories you will love this. Narration was great, easy to distinguish different characters, intonation great. Story rolls along making you laugh, cringe altogether feel good factor as you expect it go be. Enjoy.

So enjoyable
What made the experience of listening to Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy the most enjoyable?
All of it, both performance and content.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved that Bridget was allowed to grow up in most ways while retaining her essential character. I found the story both funny and moving. Very very enjoyable.
Have you listened to any of Samantha Bond’s other performances? How does this one compare?
Excellent
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The final disclosure of Mark's death, and the descriptive passages on how very much he was missed by Bridget and her family which were moving without being mawkish..

Bridget and Rockster being interrupted in the middle of some nighttime gymnastics by Bridget's eldest child Billy.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, I listen to books to help me drift off to sleep, and this did not do the job! All I wanted to do was stay up and listen.

Entertaining listen, will be forgotten in a week
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Book was entertaining for most of the time but in some moments the main character seems a bit exaggerated with her nativity and silliness. The book is gripping enough to listen but leaves no great impression and is for sure not as big a hit as the first one.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
Develop more details of the romantic thread with mr w.
What about Samantha Bond’s performance did you like?
Great narration. Characters were very well performed. Strong side of this audiobook.
Was Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy worth the listening time?
Yes if you're after a light entertainment

Great Narration, story better than I was expecting
If you could sum up Bridget Jones in three words, what would they be?
In Another World
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
The ending was a bit obvious to be honest, but then these sort of things usually are...
Which scene did you most enjoy?
No one in particular
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not really, it was nice to dip into.
Any additional comments?
I thought that Samantha Bond as the older BJ was inspired. Would be great for the film, though I suspect just slightly too old in reality (certainly by the time they get their act together to make a film), and also too thin to be BJ...
But as the voice on the audio book - just great!
The story really was not the let down that I was expecting from the reviews and the "Mark Darcy dead?!" outcry.
All in all, a great bit of escapism.

Not a let down
What did you like most about Bridget Jones?
I can't fault Helen Fielding when it comes to bringing us up to date with Bridget Jones. Bridget has not lost the spirit I have come to love in the previous books.

Welcome return
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
If you enjoyed the first book you will enjoy this, it follows the same formula but updated to Bridget struggling with single motherhood. It is predictable but this did not spoil the enjoyment for me. Anything that makes me laugh out loud has got to be good!
What other book might you compare Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy to, and why?
Obviously the first Bridget Jones. Better than the second installment.
Have you listened to any of Samantha Bond’s other performances? How does this one compare?
This is the first I will look out for others. She has distinctive voice but this fits with Bridget Jones well.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
At first Bridget does not write much about the death of her husband but later when we are given more detail it is moving.
