Summary
From number one New York Times best-selling author Kathryn Purdie comes a high-stakes fantasy duology flush with doomed romance and macabre magic, perfect for fans of Stephanie Garber and Roshani Chokshi.
Bone Criers are the last descendants of an ancient famille charged with using the magic they draw from animal bones to shepherd the dead into the afterlife - lest they drain the light from the living.
Ailesse has been prepared since birth to become their matriarch, but first she must complete her rite of passage: to kill the boy she’s destined to love.
Bastien’s father was slain by a Bone Crier, and he’s been seeking revenge ever since. Now, his vengeance must wait, as Ailesse’s ritual has begun and their fates are entwined - in life and in death.

Worth a read/listen
interesting story.
Enjoyed the narration from the three main characters, although the male narrators voice doesn't seem to fit quite right 😅 sounds like a much older man than the character should be

Strange editing and unsuitable narrators
This is another slow burn where noting actually happens until the very end, and even then it’s not particularly exciting. I will not be reading the sequel! I would also like to give a heads up regarding the narrators, especially Bastien’s voice which is delivered sounding like he’s in constant excruciating pain, on the verge of passing out and ending every sentence on a weird note (listen to the sample and hear for yourself!). It’s difficult to listen to. There’s also really bad editing in places, where it seems like someone has been cutting and pasting little bits every now and again -the background, volume and tone of voice changes suddenly, then goes back to normal after a word or a sentence. Bizzare -and distracting!
