Summary

A secret history. A long-ago summer. A house with an untold story....

The spellbinding mystery from the Sunday Times best-selling Richard and Judy Pick author of The Glass House.

The hours pass differently at Black Rabbit Hall.

For the four Alton children, it's the perfect summer escape where not much ever happens - until one stormy evening, something does and their idyllic world is shattered.

Decades later, Lorna is drawn to a beautiful yet crumbling old house she hazily remembers from childhood - feels a bond she does not understand.

But a disturbing message left by one of the Alton children tells her that Black Rabbit Hall's history is as dark and tangled as its woods.

And much like her own past, it must be brought into the light....

A spellbinding story of two women, separated by decades, but inextricably linked by their connection to the beautiful and mysterious Black Rabbit Hall.

Not a fan of split timeline plot devices

However the writing was quite atmospheric. I did feel the story was leading somewhere but when we reached the climax, it was skimmed over and told in retrospect which weakened any reveals.

Good A plot, weak B plot.

I don't know why books like this have two timelines. There's one old timeline which is actually interesting about a family falling apart after the mother dies, the father withers and an evil stepmother intrudes. The new timeline is about a Bridezilla obsessed with having a wedding at some old broken down hall she stood outside of with her mum a couple of times.

While the old timeline was compelling and made up much of the story it wasn't very shocking. You can sort of guess what will happen and it does. I liked the ending and thought it wasn't a bad story just too slowly paced. This book was 13 hours and it could easily have fit in 8. The narration was fine.

Drew Me In

This book was an absolute delight. I love stories that involve old country houses and this one drew me in from the start. It’s so rich in detail I feel I could walk round Black Rabbit Hall itself. Beautifully narrated, the voice of Nancy was just as I imagined she would speak. Perfect. It has the twists and turns of an old staircase , you won’t be disappointed. Perfect for fans of Kate Morton’s books too

Good accompaniment to hours of baking!

Thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. Didn't mind the narrator, so many annoy me one way or another. Brought the atmosphere of the house to life very well. Voiced Caroline perfectly in my opinion. Very easy to give identities to the characters. I lose interest in quite a few audiobooks and can't wait for them to finish, but not this one. Highly recommended.

A little out of the ordinary

The narrator drew me in immediately and held my attention throughout the book. Storyline not obvious, (to me at least). The characters believable; the attention to descriptions and details nicely done without slowing down the flow of the plot.

What a great storyteller Eve Chase is!

I don't often give five stars but have to this time, as I was riveted by the story and at the end could not move from my seat until I had finished listening to it. It was beautifully narrated with not one jarring moment. If you like a family story with secrets unfolding all the way along and chapters leaving you in suspense, then do try this book.
