Summary

New York Times Bestseller

Read by the author.

Jinger Vuolo, the sixth child in the famous Duggar family of TLC's 19 Kids and Counting and Counting On, recounts how she began to question the unhealthy ideology of her youth and learned to embrace true freedom in Christ.

When Jinger Duggar Vuolo was growing up, she was convinced that obeying the rules was the key to success and God's favor. She zealously promoted the Basic Life Principles of Bill Gothard,

  • fastidiously obeying the modesty guidelines (no shorts or jeans, only dresses),
  • eagerly submitting to the umbrella of authority (any disobedience of parents would place her outside God's protection),
  • promoting the relationship standard of courtship, and
  • avoiding any music with a worldly beat, among others.

Jinger, along with three of her sisters, wrote a New York Times bestseller about their religious convictions. She believed this level of commitment would guarantee God's blessing, even though in private she felt constant fear that she wasn't measuring up to the high standards demanded of her.

In Becoming Free Indeed, Jinger shares how in her early twenties, a new family member—a brother-in-law who didn't grow up in the same tight-knit conservative circle as Jinger—caused her to examine her beliefs. He was committed to the Bible, but he didn't believe many of the things Jinger had always assumed were true. His influence, along with the help of a pastor named Jeremy Vuolo, caused Jinger to see that her life was built on rules, not God's Word.

Jinger committed to studying the Bible—truly understanding it—for the first time. What resulted was an earth-shaking realization: much of what she'd always believed about God, obedience to His Word, and personal holiness wasn't in-line with what the Bible teaches.

Now with a renewed faith of personal conviction, Becoming Free Indeed shares what it was like living under the tenants of Bill Gothard, the Biblical truth that changed her perspective, and how she disentangled her faith with her belief in Jesus intact.

Great narrator

I found this book interesting. Jinger is a great narrator, I finished it in two listens. I liked how honest she was. Part of you wonders if she’s swapped one set of preachy ideas for another, but she seems happy and fulfilled. If you ever watched the show, this is well worth a listen.

Such a beautiful story that shows the redeeming grace of God.

Thankful that this book is out in the world and is such a life giving example of how God is always faithful even in difficult or challenging circumstances. I feel encouraged after listening to this story.

Fantastic book exploring her journey and finding the real Jesus

Really liked this book, Jinger’s real and raw accounts are refreshing. I watched the tv show and have been interested in seeing their journey on Counting On and was sad when it was cancelled, I hadn’t realised the impact of their upbringing or Bill Gothard’s teaching until now.

Not gonna lie

I totally bought this for the possible gossip around her family. But I'm glad she had managed to break free from the suffocating rules that her family and community imposed and it's nice to hear the process of how she did it. I hope you continue to grow and are successful in making your daughters feel valued and happy growing up.

Thank you Jinger for this wonderfully written book

I bought Audible just so I could listen to this book. I had never watched the Duggar shows or heard of them. I never knew anything about Gothard’s teachings. I found Jinger Duggar through her recent interviews with GirlDefined and knew I had to read this book. God has brought this book to me at His perfect timing (Ecc 3:11).

Jinger, by the Lord’s enabling you have written an incredibly impactful and freeing book. Thank you so much for pursuing to create it and finish it, I am sure it was very difficult at times to continually think upon these topics for the purpose of completing the book. But I know that even in even that, God will use all of it for your good and His glory.

With humility and respect, Jinger, pulls apart the error from Gothard’s teaching and shows us the truth in Scripture. I am impressed that at never in any point did she make any sort of ‘low blows’ or callous remarks towards Bill Gothard or anyone from that circle. She truly showed me in this book how one can expose evil and error, with humility, meekness and a sound mind.
I loved that all Bible verses were fully quoted and not just cited.

The whole time I listened, I would continually think of this verse about Jinger: 2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.
Particular the last part, a sound mind.
It is obvious that Jinger is grounded in Scripture and has a sound mind through the Lord Jesus Christ.

As I listened, I was also so in awe of how God truly had His hand on Jinger her whole life. How even through being her sister’s chaperone, so she could listen in on those Biblical conversations, and then meeting her husband and how God gave her a man to walk with her through the disentanglement of errors. Such wondrous works God has done!

I never came under Gothard’s teachings but I struggle very much with trying to earn God’s love by my ‘perfect Christian behaviour’ (which isn’t a possible thing since I am a sinner!) and my own man made rules or rules I have picked up from other people. For example, something Jinger touched on in the book which I also struggle with, is even now as a new mum with a baby to take care of, I feel overwhelming condemnation if I do not read my Bible in the morning and for a certain amount of time. I also experience what she wrote as an overactive conscious, this is something I very much struggle with. The strong fear and anxiety she felt as a teenager over choices like playing ball with family or reading the Bible, this is something I still am struggling with after 5 years since being saved.
I am trying to cling to the truth of Scripture that it is Christ’s righteousness and perfect life that makes God love me, not my Christian performance. This book were pieces of the puzzle in helping me break free from my own struggles. Thank you so much.

Jinger gave me hope that if God can set her free from the manmade rules and fear, maybe He can set me free too.

I wish we were friends Jinger! But I think I will only get to see you in Heaven as I live in Ireland 😀. God bless you richly, more and more. I thank God sincerely for bringing this book into my life. I am already looking forward to reading it a second time.

Easy listening

I wasn’t expecting it to be so focussed on Jesus and more Jingers story but enjoyed it nonetheless.

An amazing account that is very clear and gives glory to our God who makes us free indeed!

I’ve watched 19 kids for years and admired the love within most family members but have always queried what I thought was a deep sadness in the eyes of some of the girls/ adults but until recently was not aware of the IBLP. I think Ginger is extremely respectful towards her family and writes movingly about finding the true God and His true nature. I pray for her sisters and mum ( and the whole family) and that they will be allowed to read this beautifully written book. I also think she makes it very clear even to YouTubers who aren’t Christian’s that she hasn’t swapped one cult for another! She explains clearly that everything she hears now, from however famous and knowledgeable a teacher must be weighed against scripture, that she could challenge / question and not be shunned and maintain the healthy relationships she now has. A very well written book I pray will be used for the glory of God, especially for her family and the other family who appeared on tv along with many members of the IBLP and even those who belong to more obviously ‘Christian’ cults. A great read and witness also for all who followed the series, all who have wandered from true faith or are seeking Christ. God bless you Jinger and your lovely husband and girls who are growing up being introduced to the true God

Freeing to read

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to jinger tell her own journey. She spoke clearly & eloquently from start to finish. I bought this book because it sounded like an interesting read. I don’t watch her tv programme & I didn’t need to have watched it to read this book.

This young mum has truly found herself & who God made her to be. He has blessed her with a godly husband & she has been open to hearing new opinions & to explore them - I can’t imagine how hard that would be, to completely change everything you ever knew.

This book is scripturally sound - she provides Bible verses to back up each point that she makes.
I’ve actually ordered a hard copy of this book as well, to gift to a friend who has recently left Catholicism to join the Pentecostal faith. She too is trying to unlearn a lifetime of beliefs & traditions & I believe Jinger’s book will bless her too.

This book is very much about her spiritual journey with only snippets of information about her own family life as a mum & wife. This is not a book if you are only wanting to hear gossip about her life.
She keeps her whole focus on Christ throughout &that made it a wonderful read. Her book has really blessed me today: highly recommend!
