Summary

At last, the definitive audiobook about perhaps the best cabin crew dramedy ever filmed: View from the Top starring Gwyneth Paltrow.

In Ayoade on Top, Richard Ayoade, perhaps one of the most 'insubstantial' people of our age, takes us on a journey from Peckham to Paris by way of Nevada and other places we don't care about. It's a journey deep within, in a way that's respectful and non-invasive; a journey for which we will all pay a heavy price, even if you've waited for the smaller paperback edition.

Ayoade argues for the canonisation of this brutal masterpiece, a film that celebrates capitalism in all its victimless glory; one we might imagine Donald Trump himself half-watching on his private jet's gold-plated flat screen while his other puffy eye scans the cabin for fresh, young prey.

Perfect bedtime listening

Admittedly listened to this more times than necessary but Ayoade's voice has a way of lulling you to sleep. I've come to rely on this as a means of nodding off. Somehow Ayoade is the only person who could pull off a book all about a film no one has heard of and at the same time interweave hilarious and adorable anecdotes of his childhood.

Please ignore the -ve reviews

There seems to be some concerted effort to leave generic negative reviews across all of Ayoade's books. I promise you, if you love language, delicious turns of phrases and have any respect for his other work you will love this audiobook.
You don't need to have watched View from the Top, or, like me, even feel like you need to after reading this. Just the forensic takedown of an obviously meritless romcom star vehicle by one of our foremost national treasures is enough in itself.
Now go and order it.

So darn funny

I was roaring with laughter when reading it with the book. He does a brilliant performance of it and it so bizzare.

Classic Ayoade!

The perfect little listen for a rainy day. Or a sunny day. My life is forever changed. No, really. It is.

Incredibly Entertaining

I has to watch the film before listening as I wanted to be able to connect the various on-screen elements with Ayoade’s hilarious, often anecdotal, critique. It reads more as a thesis than it does a film review, or even book.

It’s utterly brilliant; definitely laugh-out-loud stuff.

Speak up, Richard!

Overall, enjoyable and, by and large, amusing, if rarely laugh-out-loud funny. Part humorous review of a film few, if any of us will recall, or indeed even seen, and part autobiography, I personally found the autobiographical bits more interesting. The only slight criticism: Ayoade has the occasional tendency to drop his voice at the end of an aside, which can be frustrating for the listener

Brilliant

Extremely funny and at moments, when Ayoade is describing his own childhood, even touching. Warmly recommend this.

Why

I don't understand why this book was made. It is at once too short to be worth a credit and too long for the content of the book. It is entirely pointless, and has contributed nothing to my life for having read it. Why anyone should be burdened with the intimate details of View From the Top is beyond comprehension.

It is, in short, the perfect book. 6/5.
