Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

In her latest book, five-time number one New York Times best-selling author Dr Brené Brown writes, 'If we want to find the way back to ourselves and each other, we need language and the grounded confidence to both tell our stories, and to be stewards of the stories that we hear. This is the framework for meaningful connection.'

In Atlas of the Heart, Brown takes us on a journey through 87 of the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human. As she maps the necessary skills and lays out an actionable framework for meaningful connection, she gives us the language and tools to access a universe of new choices and second chances - a universe where we can share and steward the stories of our bravest and most heart-breaking moments with one another in a way that builds connection.

Over the past two decades, Brown's extensive research into the experiences that make us who we are has shaped the cultural conversation and helped define what it means to be courageous with our lives. Atlas of the Heart draws on this research, as well as Brown's singular skills as a researcher/storyteller, to lay out an invaluable research-based framework that shows us that naming an experience doesn't give the experience more power, it gives us the power of understanding, meaning and choice.

Brown shares, 'I want this to be an atlas for all of us, because I believe that, with an adventurous heart and the right maps, we can travel anywhere and never fear losing ourselves. Even when we have no idea where we are.'

I love you Brenè ❤️

Firstly, she had me at her Ted talk. I live her work, everyone should. However, I cannot believe her children are 16 & 22 years old now!! Hearing that cemented just how meaningful her work has been to me because her stories, like "the marble jar", mean her children are part of the teaching in my mind.
Anyway, that was entirely beside the point.
This book is about the importance of language in being able to express and understand ourselves but it also confirmed for me that despite what we may think words without understanding of their meaning, true meaning and words without their true expression being received are almost useless. The emotions and feelings underneath our words are what children need to be taught in school and what the rest of us missed learning in the main for generations. The impact of this is being felt all over the world. We can't ignore feelings, we can't ignore words and we can't ignore the hurt we cause one another when we do. Words as Buddhists say are just fingers pointing at the moon. They are not the moon. We are shaped by our experiences in life. If we don't understand the layers to us then humanity really is doomed to extinction. This book should be the starting point for everyone. Oh and finally, I love that she understands the difference between how an audio book and a book are received! Of course she does. Thoughtfully repeating exerts to save me pinning it or scrabbling for a pen, because of course we are multi tasking the book. I also love how she reads it, as though she isn't reading at all and is conversing comfortably with the listener. There are many audio books I cannot continue with or that I slow down or speed up as it really is an art. As I said... I love you Brenè Brown ❤️ she is one of my heroes for sure.

Articulated Eternal experiences

I was deeply moved by the theories explored and the new terminologies uncovered in this book. Brown has done it again, I’m armed with a deeper understanding of myself, my triggers and the status of my heart.

Her best book yet?

It really feels like it brings everything she’s done before together. I will be able to use this learning personally and professionally. Brené remains my goddess of everything. I resonate with everything she writes and she never fails to make me think again about something I thought I knew about or maybe didn’t. Thank you to her again. ❤️
