Summary

Five toasts. Five people. One lifetime.

I'm here to remember - all that I have been and all that I will never be again.

At the bar of a grand hotel in a small Irish town sits 84-year-old Maurice Hannigan. He's alone, as usual - though tonight is anything but. Pull up a stool and charge your glass, because Maurice is finally ready to tell his story.

Over the course of this evening, he will raise five toasts to the five people who have meant the most to him. Through these stories - of unspoken joy and regret, a secret tragedy kept hidden, a fierce love that never found its voice - the life of one man will be powerfully and poignantly laid bare.

Heart-breaking and heart-warming all at once, the voice of Maurice Hannigan will stay with you long after all is said.

Heartbreakingly honest

The narrator's voice had me captivated from the first sentence. Enjoyed every minute of this book, even with the sadness it evoked. Excellent and highly recommended!

Funny, beautiful and heartbreaking.

I thoroughly recommend buying this beautiful book, I heard a review on Radio 4 praising it but Niall Buggy’s narration is the perfect voice, I didn’t want it to end....

I can still hear Maurice in my mind

I loved this book. Getting to know Maurice and his life through the toasts he gives to five of his family - telling the stories they shared, who shaped him and how, helping us to understand his greatest loves and his shaping of their lives - was something I greatly enjoyed. The narrator was just perfect in my opinion bringing Maurice to life. I felt the emotions, the humour, the decision he made and the story touched me with laughs along the way and some tears. Good writing, good reading.

A masterpiece

This is the most fantastic book, read by Niall Buggy who brings it all to life. It is a man's life at the end when he is in his 80's and all the sadness, happiness, and troubles he had. I recommend this book as a brilliant book to listen too, it will remain with you.

The voice of an Angel

Not only was I drawn in by the story with its twists n turns, realisations and honesty but the voice is just spell binding - a great listen with some one liners that will remain with you - I even used one the other day - well done Ann Griffin!

Stunning novel full of pathos. By turns heartwarming and heartbreaking. A story of a life told in a most touching way.
