Summary

When the government offers a twenty-six-year-old former Marine a five-figure payday, there’s only one question: Who does he have to kill?

1991. A restless young man called Dox is back home in Texas. His friends have missed him, and his mother and sisters need him. But after four years as a Marine and another two as a CIA contractor fighting the Soviet Union alongside the Afghan mujahideen, small-town life in Abilene is a suffocating dead end.

Another secret war, this one in Southeast Asia, offers a big payday and the solution to his family’s troubles. But secret wars are never what they’re billed to be, and Dox is about to get the education of his young life. Among the lessons—the only thing more dangerous than war is falling in love with your enemy.

Critic reviews

“Last seen in 2021’s The Chaos Kind, former Marine sniper Dox, a supporting character in bestseller Eisler’s John Rain and Livia Lone franchises, takes center stage…The speedy pace and skillful scene-setting remain Eisler trademarks.”Publishers Weekly

“The heart and soul of Amok make it much more than a simple story of guns and violence and transcends it to an emotional tale packing quite a punch.”—Best Thriller Books

Great but can we go back to thrillers, now?

Barry Eisler doesn't seem capable of a bad novel. This is a great read, as always... but: I miss the hard-as-nails, tense and exciting John Rain thrillers that were simply about being thrillers.
While it's a relief he has got past (I hope) the sex trafficking sagas, he has now moved on to rape as a weapon of war. These are noble and worthy causes and it's great he has tackled them. And enough already.
Dox is an engaging character and a perfect foil to Rain but a bit too soft on his own. Poignant is fine, tear-jerking is over the top.
I read thrillers as escapism. I'd like Eisler to give us back the cause-free-thriller-for-its- own-sake thriller.

Elster is brilliant

Not often the author narrates but Barry does a brilliant job and really gets into his characters
This story is full of jeopardy and full of emotion that the author conveys with every breath. I’m sure he was crying at times

the authenticity of the story

when I started to listen to it, I did not think I would enjoy the story, BUT THEN it made me so I could not put it down. The poignancy and brilliant way the author read it had me enthralled and I listened to it every spare minute I had. I thoroughly recommend it!
