About this listen

A gorgeous, haunting and captivating tale of a century-long family mystery in the wilds of Scotland and one woman's hunt for the truth.

Scotland, 1949: Caroline Gillan and her new husband, Alasdair, have moved back to Kelly Castle, his dilapidated family estate in the middle of nowhere. Stuck caring for their tiny baby, and trying to find her way with an opinionated mother-in-law, Caroline feels adrift, alone and unwelcome.

But when she is tasked with sorting out the family archives, Caroline discovers a century-old mystery that sparks her back to life. There is one Gillan bride who is completely unknown - no photos exist, no records have been kept - the only thing that is certain is that she had a legitimate child. Alasdair's grandmother.

As Caroline uncovers a strange story that stretches as far as the Arctic circle, her desire to find the truth turns obsessive. And when a body is found in the grounds of the castle, her hunt becomes more than just a case of curiosity. What happened all those years ago? Who was the bride? And who is the body?

Terrible narration

This is a pretty good story, however I would suggest reading it rather than listening to this version. The narrator has a lovely voice but it’s filled with numerous mistakes where the words are wrong and the punctuation is ignored. This makes it difficult to follow in places.

Unpredictable & well written

Enjoyable writing as always, sad, intelligent but rewarding in that the story took many unexpected turns.

I enjoyed the story

An enjoyable listen though some of the storyline was a bit far fetched. The narration was fine.

Interesting story

Narration very annoying, breaking mid sentence … I feel you loose something of the character’s.
I think better to read the book !

I think I must have listened to a different book

I throughly enjoyed this book and didn’t find anything wrong with warm voice of the narrator. The previous reviews almost put me off buying it, but I’m very pleased that I did!

Interesting story

Imaginative story. Slow plot development and maybe a little rushed at the end. Enjoyed the book itself overall but .,,, the narration let the narrative itself down with strange pauses almost as if for a full stop and then the sentence continued. Accent good but some words mispronounced as well.

Narration distrating

Whilst I was interested to know what happens in this book I could not finish it due to the narration. Everything was over emphasised and sometimes stilted. It was really hard to concentrate. Sorry.

Terrible narration

I agree with other reviewers…..I just couldn’t stand listening to the narrators voice. It’s so distracting and difficult to understand. There were So many gaps, errors and stilted words. She has a very strong Scottish accent but it wasn’t that it was just Very poor narration. I’m going to plough on as I need to have read it for book club and don’t have time to actually read the book. But I would not recommend listening to it
I’ll be getting my money back.

Good story, not so good narration

Elizabeth Gifford once again portrays some of Scotland’s history in a way that pulls in the reader.
Sadly, the narration does not do the book justice. As well as mispronunciations, the reader pauses in wrong places, has no notion of developing the voice of the character and has a lilting tone that takes away from the tone.
