About this listen
Wanted: a respectable woman to care for a motherless child.
When William D. Thomas’s wife dies in childbirth, he places an advertisement in his local newspaper seeking a nanny for his newborn child. He is thankful when an experienced nanny arrives at 43, Laurence Street, and takes over from his frazzled housekeeper Mrs McHugh.
Mrs McHugh confides in her bedridden friend Betty, who has a bird’s-eye view of all the happenings on Laurence Street, that the nanny is not all she seems. Betty begins her own investigation into the mysterious woman.
When the bodies of twin babies are discovered buried in a back garden by a family who have moved from their tenement home into a country cottage, a police investigation begins. But it is Betty who holds the key to discovering who the nanny really is...and the reason she came to 43, Laurence Street.

Fantastic in every way!
I adore historical fiction, and I absolutely loved this book. I was brought back in time as I went about my tasks with my earbuds in. The story had my full attention from the very beginning, and I found it hard to put it down. I grew up in Co Cavan, so the towns mentioned were familiar to me. I liked that!
Nicola Cassidy's writing style is exactly the kind that I enjoy. The narration is excellent... very easy to listen to. I wanted this story to go on and on. A few unexpected twists along the way, one or two shocks, where my jaws dropped! I'm currently reading 'Adele' on paperback, also written by Nicola. It’s equally engrossing, but in a different way!

Brilliant book
This is the second of Nicola Cassidy’s books I have listened to. Gripping from start to finish. I love the way you are teased with bits of information and makes you want more! Again the characters are brought to life by Emma Thorpe’s narration & the descriptions transport you into the scene. Brilliant!

A satisfying 'read'
For the first part of the story, I was often confused about the characters. It might have been easier to follow if I had been reading it. And, though I rarely do this after reading or listening to a book, I think I'd like to read the book one day. The narration was excellent. The story didn't quite work out the way I expected it to, which was good. It was easy to listen to, and I'll definitely look for more books written by this author, and also more read by the narrator.

I listen to books when I walk everyday and with this book I didn’t notice the miles or the cold.
I really enjoyed the twists that emerged as the story unfolded.
Beautifully read with believable accents.
