About this listen

Prepare for the jaw-dropping finale of Sabaa Tahir's beloved New York Times bestselling An Ember in the Ashes fantasy series, and discover: Who will survive the storm?

Picking up just a few months after A Reaper at the Gates left off…

The long-imprisoned jinn are on the attack, wreaking bloody havoc in villages and cities alike. But for the Nightbringer, vengeance on his human foes is just the beginning.

At his side, Commandant Keris Veturia declares herself Empress, and calls for the heads of any and all who defy her rule. At the top of the list? The Blood Shrike and her remaining family.

Laia of Serra, now allied with the Blood Shrike, struggles to recover from the loss of the two people most important to her. Determined to stop the approaching apocalypse, she throws herself into the destruction of the Nightbringer. In the process, she awakens an ancient power that could lead her to victory – or to an unimaginable doom.

And deep in the Waiting Place, the Soul Catcher seeks only to forget the life – and love – he left behind. Yet doing so means ignoring the trail of murder left by the Nightbringer and his jinn. To uphold his oath and protect the human world from the supernatural, the Soul Catcher must look beyond the borders of his own land. He must take on a mission that could save – or destroy – all that he knows.

beautiful

I cried for the last 6 chapters as I felt such sorrow for Helene and Darren. I honestly love helene and think she is the what character but her ending and position was fitting for her. I like the careers for Elias and Laia. the story was fantastic with many POVs so I could understand and empathise with antagonists and protagonists .

the only bad bit is that I feel some magical concepts were just not explained enough or brushed over.

Not sure

I'd really been looking forward to this and had listened to the last three in preparation. It really threw me that the voice actor for Elias had changed and I think because of that I couldn't really get into this one. I kept forgetting who was talking and it didn't sound right.
Vague spoilers- I also felt like some people were killed really easily and others weren't. I didn't like the relevation about one of the main characters or that they suddenly got more powerful, but kept forgetting conveniently to use them for plot purposes. I didn't think it was as good or as engaging as the other books.

Not as bad as the reviews seem to say

I enjoyed the book overall, and the ending was good, though I didn't agree with the choice of some deaths.

The narrator change for Elias was jarring as they pronounced certain words differently which always broke my immersion.

The Best Series Ever!

Words cannot describe how much I loved this story and the characters. Such a satisfying ending, although I am sad that our heroes’ story has come to an end. Thank you Sabaa Tahir for this amazing story.

Lackluster ending

I was so looking forward to this book as I really enjoyed the first 3 and wanted to see how the story would end but unfortunately, I don't think it lived up to the other books in the series.

One of the main things which put me off was the change in narrator for Alia's character. He just didn't give me the same feelings. I'm not sure what the reasons were for changing narrators, but when you're so far into a series and Alia being one of the main characters, the listener has bonded with that voice, so a change just throws it out.

Also, I thought the book dragged on a bit and can't honestly remember much of what happens, there was a lot of the characters travelling.

Spoiler ahead!!!

I also feel that she didn't have to kill off Harper, I really liked him, he helped ground Helen so it would have been great if he didn't die. I also thought Olivia's death was just for the sake of shock and killing a character the reader/listener liked.

It was a shame because this was one of my favourite series before this last book.

A bit boring, sadly.

It annoyed me that they swapped out the voice actor for one of the main characters for this book. The first two books in the series were good, the third was a bit less so and this final one I found to be quite meh. I struggled to finish it, which is the exact opposite reaction you'd want for a supposedly epic finale.

Overall I'd give it 3 stars.

One of the best fantasy series to listen to!

Fantastic narration across the entire series. I thoroughly enjoyed this and was glad I got the whole series as an audiobook.

The story is gripping from the very start and this was the perfect conclusion. I was gutted about Avitas and loved that we finally managed to see a softer side to Keris Veturia.

Loved how Laia became such a super hardcore badass and probably the character with the most growth, while Elias frustrates me sometimes!

Overall - a stellar series!
