Summary
Laurence Fitzroy is trapped in a golden cage. The only son of a wealthy London baronet, he's struggling to escape his father's suffocating world. But Laurie is losing his fight. At 19 years of age, bright and imaginative, he's no match for the brutal Sir William. Laurie wants to be an actor - bad enough as far as Sir William is concerned, but, worse than that, he's gay.
One bitter winter night, he meets a young homeless man huddled in blankets outside the opera house. The two form a bond straight away, and Laurie takes him home, wanting only to offer him food and a warm bed. But Sasha is a passionate Romani immigrant, and his beauty and sweet nature soon overwhelm Laurie's chaste intentions, leaving him hopelessly in love.
Laurie and Sasha reach out desperately to one another from their different worlds, and against all odds begin an affair, hidden in the attics of Laurie's sumptuous home and on the bleak moorland of a Romani encampment. For Laurie, it's a delicious sexual awakening, and Sasha returns his affections, opening up to him a whole new world of freedom.
But Sasha has secrets, and a murky, violent past. When he vanishes, he leaves Laurie bereft and alone in a city he hardly recognizes any more. Now Laurie has to stand on his own two feet and find the strength to rescue his lover - and himself.

WOW WOW WOW
This was a freebie for me and I was expecting some cheap erotic trash. But no I was pleasantly surprised. Very surprised indeed. Not only was a very well described and narrated believable British story (I hate American sleeve trash), it was extremely erotic which as a gay man appealed and affected me directly. But it is not just a gay sex story. It is but so much more besides. I instantly downloaded the next instalment of apparently three episodes to listen to back to back. I am now wondering where and when the third will be found and what happens to our two delicious young GAY heroes. Thank you Harper for your interest in gay stuff and how do you manage to describe those intimate moments that still resonate with me now that I am an old queer of 60 years. I will certainly be browsing through your other titles with renewed interest and there are so many to choose from. Luckily I have already inadvertently done so without knowing your work before hand. I just his these can live up to your Prince Trilogy.

Well read
Some sentences were recorded twice but it did not lessen the performance quality. I liked the story but was very confused in the beginning because Audible tagged this as 'historical'. I don't often read the blurb, so I was waiting for a time portal to open or a second storyline to start.
I was entertained and will read part 2.

Harping on about Harper
My favourite of the Fox novels I’ve had, I thought Scrap Metal would be hard to beat but this one was fantastic, possibly my favourite of this genre I’ve come across from any author. I am not being biased because I’m a Londoner and know all the places referenced, I promise. Listen to the whole book in one sit in

Mostly loved this,
Lovely story, and a great performance form the reader. Alas, the many many absolute nonsenses around both the acting profession and the costs of living in London at any point in the 21st century were a bit of a disruption, but not, fortunately, a frequent one.

New narrator to me...and he does a great job!!
Very accomplished narration, and a pleasure to listen to. Accents [of which there were several in this story] were no problem at all to Rusty, and this may have been one of Harper Fox's earliest stories, but the lyrical prose and the Young Adult storyline were terrific as always.
The Fitzroy family were fairly dysfunctional, but Laurie was an absolute star and undeserving of his drunken, uncaring brute of a father. Sascha made the perfect foil for Laurie and had his own family horrors unfortunately. The Lost Prince is up next.

A Midwinter Success
A fabulous narrator like Rusty Coles together with virtuoso writing from Harper Fox equals a dream team.
The complex emotions and subsequent actions captured in the storytelling are fascinating, thrilling and at times breathtaking with many insights into the human condition.
I commend this book and The Lost Prince in A Midwinter Prince Series, for the enjoyment they brought and hope to repeat many times.
