Summary

Gifted thief Romeria has flourished from her days as a street kid pilfering wallets to survive. Now she thrives, stealing jewels from the rich under the involuntary employ of New York City's most notorious crime boss. But when an enigmatic woman secures her services at swordpoint, Romeria is plunged into a startling realm of opposing thrones, warring elven, and elemental magic she cannot begin to fathom.

Her quest is straightforward: Steal a stone from Islor's sacred garden without anyone discovering her true identity, which would earn her certain death. But the identity she has inexplicably assumed is that of the captured Ybarisan princess - an enemy to Islor after she poisoned their beloved king and queen on the day she was to marry the prince.

Her betrothed, the newly crowned King Zander, detests her with every grain of his handsome being. Zander gives her a choice: life in a cell or an acquittal of all charges in exchange for her help in exposing the growing plot against him.

Romeria sees no other option and embraces the tricky role of smitten queen-to-be until she can escape. As she digs deeper, she discovers monstrous truths that could spell ruin for all.

Good start to a new series

The narrator brought the story to life and distinguishes different characters. It did take a while for the story to become more fast paced but still enjoyable. Will certainly listen to the next in series.

Wonderful storytelling

This book definitely leaves a great impression on the reader, from wonderful interpersonal relationships, political intrigue, romance and interesting worldbuilding. I genuinely appreciated the main character, Romeria, and how she navigates this new world - she definitely felt like an intelligent character. This my second time listening to this book, and I am currently reading the fourth and final book. I definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a fun read that has a captivating story - the writing of the books stay consistently good throughout and they are all well paced. Loved that on my second time round, things that were not clear before suddenly made stark sense. Incredibly intelligent of the author. And the narrator did a wonderful job with all the voices. Thank you.

Loved it.

Really enjoyed this story, and NEED to listen to the next one.
the narrator's voice was annoying at 1st but got used to it, well worth it, especially as she did so many different accents for each character well.

Mad but brilliant

ok so this story is crazy and if I hadn't been on a long drive I probably would not have kept going because the plot is crazy. Man I'm glad I did. it's been one week and I'm already half way through the second book. The world building and characters are really great and I think looking back the reason the first book is so off the wall is because there's a colossal set up across a few characters in order for the second book to make sense. It's incredibly complicated but so worth it. Get to book 2!

Engaging fantasy romance

I enjoyed it book. It’s not the best fantasy I’ve read the writing and world building is fairly average but the plot kept me in engaged and I thought the romance was well done. It’s a good book if you like the enemies to lovers trope. The narrator’s tone/voice I found hard to get on with at first but I got used to it and she did a decent job at tone and voicing of characters.

So good!!

It’s a lot of world building but I really enjoyed this book. It really gets going in the second half and ends at a delicious part of the story which has made me download the second and I will start it straight after pressing submit on this review

There are dreadful books with impeccable narration, and then there is this

It says something about the story that the robotic narration did not made me DNF this. She's good with the accents though, should have narrated the entire book like that.

Bored :-( DNF after 6 hours

I wanted to love this, but I didn't. Others might love it, but sadly not me.

The good bits: It seems to be a fantasy mixed with contemporary. With world-travelling and whatnot. There are demons, elves, magic, healing, gods, vampires, etc.

The bits I didn't enjoy: It is slow moving, slightly boring narration and I just realized I didn't care about any of the characters. The guy who I assume is the main male interest, we've only met a few times in the past 6 hours, just isn't that interesting so far. I don't mind slow moving stories, and I prefer long audio books... but this was just not doing it for me.
