Stella Adler was one of the most important woman theater artists of the 20th Century. Born into the Yiddish theater and a founding member of the Group Theater, Adler was the only major American acting teacher to study with Konstantin Stanislavski. As a teacher she shaped the work of artists such as Marlon Brando, Salma Hayek, Harvey Keitel, Melanie Griffith, Robert DeNiro, Elaine Stritch, Benicio Del Toro, Donna Murphy, Warren Beatty and Kate Mulgrew, as well as choreographers Alvin Ailey and Jerome Robbins to name but a few. Her books include The Technique of Acting, The Art of Acting, Stella Adler on Ibsen Strindberg and Chekhov and Stella Adler on America's Master Playwrights. Her work is archived at the University of Texas at Austin’s Harry Ransom Center. The conservatory she established In 1949 is now called the Stella Adler Studio of Acting, which, along with its sister school, the Art of Acting Studio in Los Angeles, continues to train actors in world-class programs.
