Born in Beggs, Oklahoma and raised in Detroit, Darnella Davis attended Cass Technical High School. A scholarship to Parsons School of Design in New York led to other opportunities to broaden her skills including French studies at the University of Dakar (Senegal), a Fine Arts degree from the University of Michigan, an MA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design, and a doctorate in Federal Indian Education Policy from the George Washington University. As a writer, researcher, artist, teacher, yoga practitioner, world traveler, and samba enthusiast, Dr. Davis continues to explore and celebrate diversity. She has consolidated many of her interests in Untangling a Red, White, and Black Heritage, A Personal History of the Allotment Era, a book that covers 130 years of her racially-mixed family history and its relevance in our nation’s conversations about race. Her book was the subject of a an article in the Sunday Outlook section of the Washington Post (January 6, 2019). She was a featured author at the 2019 Oklahoma Book Festival, on C-SPAN 3 American History, for a New Books of the American West podcast, and has lectured at the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice at Brown University. Tiya Miles, professor of history and Radcliffe Alumnae Professor, Harvard University writes, “…Darnella Davis chronicles a moving personal quest and a surprising family saga that contribute new insights for Indian Territory and Oklahoma histories…original and thought-provoking contribution to the literature…a smooth and accessible read…arguing for the ‘authenticity’ and ‘unique value’ of mixed-race families like hers to the broader American story…courageous…a labor of love by an author for her family, enriches a growing academic and public conversation about Afro-Native histories and experiences.” NAIS, Journal of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association, Vol. 7.1--2020
