I was born in Elkhart, Indiana in 1961 and grew up in Archbold, Ohio with loving parents, three siblings, a tight-knit Mennonite church community, a school that I loved, and dear friends. I first became interested in people, languages, and cultures other than my own when migrant workers from Mexico and refugees from Vietnam came to my hometown. After leaving home, I received a B.A. from Goshen College and an M.A. from Indiana University. I have had the pleasure of living and working in seven countries: Egypt, Palestine, Romania, Kuwait, Sri Lanka, Japan, and the United States. In the U.S., I have taught at Indiana University, Ohio University, and Eastern Mennonite University. My career as an English language teacher has involved classroom teaching, professional development for teachers, curriculum development, and program administration. I have been interested in writing and have kept a journal since I was young. My first memoir highlights my experience in Palestine, while in my blog, I have written about my experiences in Mexico, Kuwait, Sri Lanka, and Japan. I am interested in family history and have written five family history books about a maternal great aunt, my paternal grandmother, my childhood years, the childhood of my parents, and the church and volunteer work of my parents in their adult lives. In my free time, I like to read, write, bike, swim, sing, do volunteer work, travel, and interact with people. In addition, my husband and I enjoy taking photos and have created photo books of our families and each country where we have lived. We enjoy the role of Aunt and Uncle to many nieces and nephews. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we have been sheltering at home in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.
