A new translation of Georges Simenon's devastating novel set on the French Riviera. It had a smell of holidays. The previous evening, in Cannes harbour, with the setting sun, had also had the smell of holidays, especially the Ardena, whose owner swaggered in front of two girls with gorgeous figures. Dazzled at first by the glamour of sunny Antibes, Maigret soon finds himself immersed in the less salubrious side of the Riviera, as he retraces the final steps of a local eccentric.

Maigret dismantles an intricate network of lies stretching from Paris to Nice. Mechanically, he had put his pince-nez down on the blotter and looked at it there with his large, short-sighted eyes. It is at that moment that the strange thing happens. One of the lenses, acting as a mirror, reflected the criss-cross, hatched ink marks which had dried on the blotter, and he could just make out a couple of words.

Maigret is called to the home of Armand de Saint-Hilaire, a highly respected official who has been found shot dead in his study by his housekeeper. After interviewing everyone concerned, Maigret is at a loss to the identity of the perpetrator until he comes across a series of letters from the past 50 years between the victim and a recently widowed woman. As Maigret uncovers the details behind the two's relationship, he gets closer to discovering the tragic truth behind the official's demise. This novel has been published in a previous translation as Maigret in Society.

Maigret is called to the home of professional gambler Felix Nahour, who has been found shot dead by his chambermaid. Maigret is shocked to recognise a photo of the man's wife, who becomes the main suspect. All signs point to her guilt, but Maigret suspects there might be more to this complicated affair.

Maigret would have found it difficult to formulate an opinion of him. Intelligent, yes, certainly, and highly so, as far as one could tell from what lay beneath some of his utterances. Yet alongside that, there was a naive, rather childish side to him. L'un d'eux, le jeune Van Houtte, affirme avoir noté la présence d'une Peugeot 403 rouge sur le quai, peu de temps avant le drame. Maigret retrouve les occupants de la voiture, mais ceux-ci parviennent à prouver leur innocence. L'identification du clochard ne va pas sans surprises : il s'agit d'un ancien médecin du nom de François Keller.

Un ancien inspecteur de Maigret devenu commissaire à Clermont-Ferrand, Lecœur, dirige l'enquête à laquelle Maigret s'intéresse tout en poursuivant sa cure et ses promenades avec son épouse. La personnalité de la victime intrigue les enquêteurs. Originaire d'une famille modeste des environs de La Rochelle, elle a été employée à Paris, puis a vécu en rentière à Nice et était installée à Vichy depuis neuf ans.

Des notables peu recommandables... À Concarneau, des faits troublants mettent la ville en émoi. On tente d'assassiner M. Mostaguen, au sortir de sa partie de cartes quotidienne à l'Hôtel de l'Amiral. Le sort s'acharne sur ses partenaires, car, deux jours après l'arrivée de Maigret, Jean Servières, rédacteur au Phare de Brest, disparaît ; le siège avant de sa voiture est maculé de sang. M. Le Pommeret meurt chez lui, empoisonné. Le docteur Michoux pense être le suivant.
