Frank and Joe Hardy, brothers who are high school students, help a stranger at the train station to exchange a five-dollar bill—only to find out later that it was counterfeit. Bayport seems to be flooded with counterfeit money, and people are on guard. But many innocent people, including Mrs. Hardy, lose money in seemingly reasonable transactions. The Secret Service and Mr. Hardy know something is happening around Bayport, but they cannot discover who or where. The Hardy Boys use their investigation skills and courage in dangerous situations to discover the counterfeiting gang.

Over a period of weeks, friends and family members fall prey to exchanges with counterfeiters, sometimes in transactions amounting to hundreds of dollars. Teenagers Joe and Frank Hardy had ample mental ability to reach conclusions and act accordingly. Some of that ability was handed down by their former police detective Fenton Hardy, and the overall concept was enhanced by their perceptive cleverness. While investigating a mysterious old house high on a cliff, Joe and Frank Hardy hear a scream and are scared away thinking the place might be haunted. Their dad has been hired by a pharmaceutical firm to find missing drug shipments and calls on the boys to help. He disappears at one point and his sons team up to rescue him from whatever happened. They made an extremely brave rescue of their dad from unscrupulous smugglers.

Bayport, the home of the Hardy Boys, is suddenly experiencing numerous car thefts. When their friend, Jack Dodd, and his father are accused of stealing a car that mysteriously shows up parked behind their barn, Frank and Joe vow to clear Dodd's good name and track down the car theft ring. The challenge is that the police, state troopers, and even Frank and Joe's detective father, Fenton Hardy, have had no luck in figuring out how the cars disappear along the Shore Road without trace.

Shore Road has a bunch of auto thefts outside Bayport, home territory of the Hardy Boys, Frank and Joe. They find out that one of their friends, Jack Dodd and his father, have been accused of the thefts. This bothers the lads because they feel certain there has been a big mistake and they intend to do something about it. As a result of their intentions and investigation the Hardy Boys wind up helping in capture of the actual car thieves who had framed and kidnapped their friends. It’s exciting listening as they work hard to aid the Dodds, father and son.
