  • The Importance of Good Character & Managing Priorities with Boyd Summerhays
    Mar 22 2022

Jason sits down with Boyd Summerhays, a prestigious golf coach for standout PGA superstars like Tony Finau, about the value of keeping family first in both a personal and professional context, and how to go about managing the relationships of multiple business partners simultaneously.

Boyd emphasizes that who he takes on as a coach has to match up with his dueling responsibilities as a father. His son, Preston Summerhays, is currently one of the top amateur players in the country and the rest of his children are all standout players in their own right. He always makes it clear to any prospective clients up front that he has to prioritize staying around family because of it. This has actually become a unique selling point to him as a coach, as people crave being around that family environment, as opposed to being a limiting factor in his career.

He also has a special partnership with Finau, making him another key factor he has to consider when taking on another professional player. When he first got the offer to coach other players, he was nervous about how it could change their dynamic, but it ended up being better for everyone. Boyd makes sure any player that he brings on is a high-character personality, and it allows everyone to play off each other in a positive manner when he holds a coaching session for all of them. Every player, except for Taylor Gooch, has also been run by Finau first to make sure everyone was on the same page about bringing them on. The newer players also get access to an experienced veteran on the course and can pick up on the habits that have made him so successful.

Boyd also talks about what made Tiger Woods into a once in a lifetime player in his prime. He had a competitive edge that he could turn on at command, making him intimidating to players who weren’t used to being around someone with that closer mentality. Boyd doesn’t think that it was premeditated or a facade to play mind games either, his personality just makes it intuitive to him. Now that his son, Charlie Woods, is becoming a standout player in his own right, Boyd believes that he’ll win at least one more Major for him.

  • What Defines a Champion with Nonito Donaire
    Mar 3 2022

Jason Mitchell talks with Nonito Donaire, a world-champion boxer in multiple weight classes, about the mentality and discipline needed to achieve success at the highest possible level, and how entrepreneurs and real estate agents alike can bring that mindset into their own business.

Nonito really hammers down on the importance of having a purpose and working with partners who you can best communicate with while achieving your shared goals. He's always had the talent and drive to fight at a high level, but his career teetered with inconsistency after ranking #2 in the world as the best pound-for-pound fighter without that extra motivator behind his actions. It wasn't until Nonito met his wife, Rachel Nonito, that he started to recapture his driving purpose to be the #1 fighter in the world.

She not only challenged him to figure out what drives him, but as a renowned fighter herself, started training him. The two have such good chemistry and shared visions that their work started to translate into success within the ring. After going toe-to-toe with Naoya Inoue, Nonito realized that he can still compete at the highest possible level still at a later stage in his career.

It also means that Nonito can have his work-life balance bleed more seamlessly into each other, as their family time is closely tied into their careers. He intentionally keeps a very tight circle of people that he lets into his life and has a level of optimism and positive energy that's truly infectious for it.

Jason then breaks down how the importance of having a purpose each and every day to strive for is critical in helping you to define your own work ethic. Some people seem to be more driven and conscientious than others naturally, but those who can push themselves to achieve more will almost always be the ones making the most sales. Sales in particular is very much an effort game, since very few people are naturally talented at it. By just pushing yourself as an agent and doing the things that most won't be willing to sacrifice, you can separate yourself from 95% of people and have a very comfortable career for it, even if you're not the most naturally talented at it.

That doesn't mean you can work 24/7 though, as it leads to diminishing returns since your personal and professional life are closely related to each other. You'll know when you're working at capacity, and when you'll eventually burn out from it, intuitively. Pushing yourself to give your best efforts over a span of time, then taking the time to recharge when needed, will have you operating at your highest possible efficiency. This also ties back into having a purpose, as knowing what should take priority in your life will keep you far more balanced. Not everyone deserves your immediate attention all of the time and having an internal pecking order of priorities will help you to make sure that your time is allocated appropriately.
