  • The Five Freedoms of Chihuahuas
    Oct 25 2023

In this episode of The Chihuahua Podcast we look at the five freedoms / domains of animal welfare and how they apply to your Chihuahua.

The Five Freedoms is a framework for animal welfare that outlines five essential domains or areas of focus to ensure the well-being of animals. These Five Freedoms were first developed by the UK Farm Animal Welfare Council in the 1960s and have since been widely adopted and adapted for various species and contexts. The Five Freedoms are:

    1. Freedom from Hunger and Thirst / Nutrition: Animals must have access to an appropriate and balanced diet, as well as clean water to maintain health and vigor.

    2. Freedom from Discomfort / Environment: Animals should be provided with an environment that offers shelter, space, and resting areas to avoid discomfort or suffering due to environmental conditions.

    3. Freedom from Pain, Injury, or Disease / Health: Animals should receive proper medical care and attention to prevent, diagnose, and treat illnesses or injuries. This includes appropriate prevention and management strategies.

    4. Freedom to Express Normal Behaviour: Animals must be allowed to engage in natural behaviours and movements that are essential to their physical and psychological well-being. This includes providing space, opportunities for exercise, and mental stimulation.

    5. Freedom from Fear and Distress / mental state / experiences: Animals should not experience fear or distress that may be caused by inappropriate handling, living conditions, or treatment. Minimizing stress and ensuring humane handling and care are crucial aspects of this freedom.

These Five Freedoms provide a comprehensive framework for assessing and improving animal welfare across a wide range of species and settings, from farm animals and companion animals to animals in research and wildlife conservation. They serve as a guide for ethical and responsible treatment of animals and are widely used as a basis for animal welfare legislation, standards, and guidelines.

  • Expert Interview - Amber Batson - Neutering
    Aug 2 2023
Amber Batson graduated from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 1999 and has worked in clinical vet practice ever since. Right from the beginning of her vet career she realized the intrinsic links between health / disease and dog behavior and how so much of her interactions with dogs required understanding of dog communication and both physical and emotional needs. Amber undertook several years of part time behavior education alongside her veterinary work and then in 2007 set up her own business, Understand Animals with the aim to bridge the gap between emerging behavioural science and its practical application to help people and the dogs they lived or worked alongside, have the best relationships. Today, Amber offers both in person and on line education on many aspects of animal behaviour and welfare regularly offering presentations to a global audience. She continues to work part time in the vet clinic where she tries hard to promote the concept of compassionate handling as well as offering vet behaviour consultations and working with welfare cases as a legal expert witness.
