  • Joseph Priestley House
    Nov 6 2024

Episode 3: In this episode of Slice of the Paranormal, We visit the home of the Dr Joseph Priestley in Northumberland, Pennsylvania. Dr Joseph Priestley is mostly well known for his isolation and discovery of Oxygen as well as other gases. He also discovered how to artificially create soda water. What is not well known about this educator, minister, and philosopher is his connection to several ghost stories. In life he was a rationalist and actually debunked the haunting at Epworth Rectory, the home of the Wesley family, Who were the founders of Methodist’s. He is also a key player in a ghost story at Bowood, the site where he discovered Oxygen in 1774…. 250 years ago! His home in Northumberland sports its very own ghostly tales and lore. While it’s the opinion of this podcaster that the Dr doesn’t haunt the site, There is some evidence his daughter in law might! The site is available to be toured as it is currently run as a museum, so our viewers/listeners are able to walk these dark halls themselves. Maybe you will experience phantom footsteps, mysterious lights, or doors closing on their own accord. We invite you to check out the site’s website for tour times and special events.

  • Sleepy Hollow
    Oct 30 2024

Episode 2: In this special Halloween episode of Slice of the Paranormal, we explain the lore of the haunted sites of Sleepy Hollow New York. We traveled the town following the path of Ichabod Crane on his famous ride. We start out exploring Sunnyside, the home of Washington Irving. We use this location to start our journey which is reputed to be haunted by Irving himself as well as a few others. Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train passed this site on the way from New York City to Buffalo New York. If you are lucky you might catch the Ghost Train passing the home in April, on the anniversary of its famous trip. We highly recommend stopping at this historic site, feel free to check their website for tour times. https://hudsonvalley.org/historic-sites/washington-irvings-sunnyside/

We drive by where Brom Bones told Ichabod about the Ghost Stories of Sleepy Hollow at the tavern. We also pass the site of Major Andres Tree, which has lore predating the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which we explore. The tree was a large ominous tulip tree where Ichabod first sees the Headless Horseman. Today it is Patriots Park, The tree was struck by lighting in the year of Benedict Arnold’s death… which is kind of ominous! https://visitsleepyhollow.com/venue/patriots-park/

We then stop at the Headless Horseman Bridge which is where the Headless Horseman throws his Flaming Pumpkin Head at Ichabod. We then go to the site of the Old Dutch Church, which is where the Headless Horseman tethers his horse nightly. An intrepid visitor can see the graves of the inspiration for Catrina Van Tassel, Brom Bones, and Ichabod Crane….. maybe even stop and see the Witches Grave! Follow the links no to find out times to visit this historic cemetery. https://visitsleepyhollow.com/old-dutch-church/

We then traveled to Casaletto Pizzeria on Beekman Avenue in downtown Sleepy Hollow to sample and review their pizza. https://www.casalettopizzeria.com

To finish off our journey, we stop at the Old ‘76 House, America’s Oldest Tavern to grab a brew and take in the haunts of Major John Andres, who was imprisoned here…. awaiting his execution up the hill for being a spy for Benedict Arnold. We highly recommend visiting this haunted establishment for its wonderful history, libations, and of course ghosts. Check out their website for times, and peruse their menu. It’s said that George Washington loved the beer at this site so much, he took the recipe to brew the beer at his Mount Vernon. Their website also has a Ghost Photo captured at the site…. Check it out here! https://www.76house.com
