Summary

Meet Emily and Paul: The parents of two young children, Emily is the newly promoted VP of marketing at a large corporation while Paul works from home or from clients' offices as an independent IT consultant. Their lives, like all of ours, are filled with a bewildering blizzard of emails, phone calls, yet more emails, meetings, projects, proposals, and plans. Just staying ahead of the storm has become a seemingly insurmountable task.

In this book, we travel inside Emily's and Paul's brains as they attempt to sort the vast quantities of information they're presented with, figure out how to prioritize it, organize it, and act on it. Fortunately for Emily and Paul, they're in good hands: David Rock knows how the brain works - and more specifically, how it works in a work setting. Rock shows how it's possible for Emily and Paul, and thus the listener, not only to survive in today's overwhelming work environment but succeed in it - and still feel energized and accomplished at the end of the day.

Your Brain at Work explores issues such as:

  • Why our brains feel so taxed, and how to maximize our mental resources
  • Why it's so hard to focus, and how to better manage distractions
  • How to maximize your chance of finding insights that can solve seemingly insurmountable problems
  • How to keep your cool in any situation, so that you can make the best decisions possible
  • How to collaborate more effectively with others
  • Why providing feedback is so difficult, and how to make it easier
  • How to be more effective at changing other people's behavior

Can be a bit monotonic, very good content.

Narrator was very good, I have learnt few methods of how to work with my brain.
Amazing is that wr are not aware of how mechanics of this organ operate day in day out.

Amazing audiobook. the stage metaphor has been cleverly developed to suggest conscious mind. I can even relate to two protagonists. I have already listened to it twice. look forward to more books from David Rock.

Outstanding

This book changed not only the way I work but the way I live my life. Ahead of its time and in tune with new insights from mindfulness research, it is a handbook to refer back to on a regular basis when struggling to understand why you may be feeling what you are feeling and what you can do about it.

Extremely useful book

It's not often you read a book in this space then change your behaviour based on what you've learnt. I've done that. I've repeated many of the ideas to people I work with (the early suggestion about the costs of prioritizing in particular) and I will continue to do so for years. A real keeper.

(Oh, and I know it's a preference thing, but I enjoyed the narrator's voice and style.)

This book really plays with your mind

A good book but only listen/read if you are doing nothing else as you need to give it all of your energy.

Loved it - but only on second attempt

What did you like most about Your Brain at Work?

Not sure why but I started to listened to this book before and it really didn’t connect with me. Was irritated with the style and the characters. Clearly it must have been my mindset at the time because recently I had a long journey and thought I may as well give it another go and switch to something else if I still don’t like it. Wow! - what a difference on the second attempt. Unlike other listeners, I found the scenarios really helpful and the information I took away is making a real difference. This is the first book that has actually helped me understand the days that just go wrong and how to change it and of course why some days just flow.
I plan to replay it whilst not in the car and take more notes so I can refer to them and help keep me on track.
Highly recommend this, but be aware that you may need to hang in there and get into the subject and characters before fully understanding the message.

Fascinating insight into how my brain works

Absolutely loved this book. Between the info presented and the great way it is given to you, there's a lot to learn and think about. Useful every day.
